Hi

I know this topic may be covered elsewhere but I just wanted to ask your opinions

when it comes to choosing a domain name, what factors do you take into consideration

I am trying to find a domain name for a video course site, but the obvious ones are taken

Regards
Kishor

For SEO purposes the .com is the best followed by the .org and .net. you want to try to find it in these extensions as they are the best for ranking purposes

Many factors come into play...yes a .com is good, but do not discount a .info...or a .org either, they pay off very nice. Also use google's keyword tool site and go through their list of keywords that deal with your video....see which ones get the most traffic, then use those words in your domain name, be creative. Remember, make a niche for yourself. ;-)

I would stick with dot com, have you seen iphone onscreen keyboard? they have ".com" as a single key.. I agree with the other poster, branding is just as important if you are in it for the long haul.. I picked out my domain the other day, bottleonbeach.com it took a while..

You can also go to sedo, and bid on some of the shorter ones.. it could cost you though

Picking up a short domain name with dot. com is the best option.

Check out name(dot)com for their new domain name suggestion tool (beta).

*.com, *.org, *.net are equally good, but i usually go with the *.com

Then i try to get KEYWORD.COM domain, if that's taken i chose KEYWORDhelp/info..or maybe if .org is free i would get keyword.org

Avoid any hyphenated and too long names, numbers...and names which are hard to remember/spell or could be mistaken for something else. I always think that someone must be able to tell a friend the domain..and the friend wouldn't need to ask for spelling. Simple rules actually.

but do not discount a .info
I do. I cant see the reason why someone wants to save $2 on a domain...and that cheapness often (not always) reflects in their sites. I cant help but think that *.info is garbage although i know its not the case in terms of SEO. I just don't like them. Would you trust/buy something from an *.info site? Seriously?

Try to keep it short and simple and if dot coms are taken try .net's. Or try including 'The'.

I try to chose domain with the product name inserted or, at least , a portion of product Name. Sometimes, if it is not available, I use some keywords related to the niche my product belongs. It's very beneficial when your domain has some insertions of your product or keywords you will use in your site and articles. In this case spider will easy move your site in the right area where all competitors are waiting for you.lol
