Just found this nice little time saver Domain Name Search

Searches for available domains while you type. Should be good for those looking for longtail domains.

  • Hi Louise, thanks so much! I've been trying to buy a few domains recently, and as we all know, the good ones are already taken! (Just like dating...)
    This tool should help, thanks

  • You're welcome guys.

I've been using it all night trying to find the right domain name. No more back and forth Godaddy searches for me from now on.

If it had an autosuggest feature it could be even better.
  • Thanks,

I swore I was not buying anymore domains. Now look at what you have done lol

    • This is just generic advice and I have no idea if it applies to this site like it applies to others, but some of those 'find a domain name' sites scrape the queries for good domain names and leave the original searcher SOL or at least held hostage over their chosen name.

Again, it may not apply to this site, you can test it by finding a good keyword rich domain name with lots of 'searches' and see if it is still availible in a few days.

If you have ever gone to a domain name search site and had your favorite domain name suddenly 'taken' or held for ransome you know what I'm talking about. If you haven't, you should know the practice exists.

But kudos to Louise for sharing this.

  • YIKES!

Is there anyway to spot if a site is doing that kind of practice? Without being stung first I mean.

Something like that happened to me once but with a domain registrar via the phone. I called up and stupidly told them which domain name I was *thinking* about buying, 30 seconds after I got off the phone it had been bought.

    • Louise,

Yea, it's a shame those games are commonplace.

As I suggeted, if you find an awesome domain name that everybody and his brother would kill for and you come back a few days later and it's still availible on that DN search engine, then the likelyhood of you being safe goes up dramatically.

Unless you can find reliable testimonies from folks that have done that, and you know for a fact you can trust the endorsement, you will most likely have to test it for yourself. Perhaps doing a little researching around in the serps could uncover some unhappy folks who got burned and are outing the company, as well.

The thing is...you have to be careful.

  • Cheers Joe, every domain I've searched for so far is still available through the domain tool.

It gets good traffic according to Quantcast:
    instantdomainsearch.com - Quantcast Audience Profile

    The Whois seems alright:
Instantdomainsearch.com - Instant Domain Search Domain Name Search

However I did find a Rip Off report:
"The issue is that the domain search is saying the domain is available and when you get to GoDaddy to register it (2 seconds later) it is no longer or never has been available."
Ripoff Report: GoDaddy.com instantdomainsearch.com GoDaddy Bait and Switch with Domain Registration Internet, Arizona

Right now the jury is still out.

    • good post Joe,

There are so many people out there falling for it.
    • Appearently so...

I'm sort of curious as to why with the speed GoDaddy allows you to check for domain names you would even want to use a tool like this? (Rhetorical question :rolleyes

I don't know if this is still the case, but for awhile a domain name you could buy at GD for a tick over $7 would cost you $35 at Network Solutions due to their policy of capturing all domain name queries and holding them hostage.

I'm am glad you are taking the time to investigate this, though. Once bitten, twice shy, as they say...

  • I use Ajax Whois all the time. I still never find the domains I want though
  • Hi

I don't think this Instant Domain name search updates it databases regularly, I bought this immarketvids.com domain and this tool says its available from Godaddy...

Godaddy search says its not available.... i would always check with a domain registrar for the availability of domains
