... to advertise a service?

This is not a plug, I have disabled my sig until I get a reply to this question.

I have finally dragged myself back out of the doldrums and taken my own sort of action. However, I need a blog. Is it allowed to use a free wordpress blog to advertise services or is it a no no?

I will buy a domain name shortly, just need a slight fund increase, but wanted to get started with this blog right now.

Also, does anyone know of a reasonably priced timekeeping softwear please?

Thanks in advance.

  • Are you talking about a blog hosted on WordPress.COM? If so, no.
  • If by "free one" you refer to the hosted blogs at wordpress.COM - no they do not allow commercial (read: money making) ads on your blog. Read their TOS; it is stated there clearly.

For the second question: this thread my help (it was posted today)

    • Hey Katie,

there are many free hosts out there, where you can get a free domain and also can use databases and transfer them later... tht means you can install wordpress without problems... only penalty is that it takes time to get indexed..so you need many backlinks and some good seo...what is not the biggest problem... but it still takes some time..

      cheer,

    • yes, you can use blogger to advertise. it's a free blogging site owned by google. Also, since blogger is owned by google you can market it as much as you want and send targeted traffic to it without getting sandboxed (your site buried).
  • If you would buy the domain pretty soon then you could set up your site on Blogger with all the articles n stuff then later migrate to your self hosted wordpress site. Search engines would soon recognize your move and follow you.

  • Let me know Katie how it turns out for you.
  • Blogger will allow that? This isn't a IM sales site, I am just selling me, well, my services.

Erm, no, not those sort of services.

    • Just read their TOS carefully to make sure your particular use will be okay. But, so far as I know, they are far less restrictive than WordPress.com.
  • what about wordpress.org.

Or do they have the same rules as wordpress .com

    • Nothing about wordpress.org. Nothing that is related to the OP question.

That is NOT a site where you make a blog. It is the site from where you download a script (software/blogging tool) called "wordpress" to be installed on your own host.

  • I also recommend Squidoo since it's build for ads. Blogger's advantage is really with ranking in google since they own it. Hub Pages can also work with Ads.

You may want to check out YOUTUBE if you want to profit without a website via commercials. Make it interesting and informative. You'll need an onscreen recording video software though and power point if you want to run slides in your video. Think of it as you own recorded WEBINAR.

    • Blimey! Video? ME? I want to attract clients not scare them to death!

I'm not too keen on Squidoo, it never really worked well for me before.
