Single best free traffic method?

Yesterday I was discussing with a friend of mine what was the single best way of generating free traffic to our sites. He was in favour of articles but I think video marketing is the most effective.
What do you think?

The single BEST free traffic method?

    1. Word of Mouth (that includes jv partners mailing out)

The second best free traffic method?

    2. SEO/Organic rankings
It takes a bit of time, but yields better results.

    Cheers

as RGallowitz pointed out, word of mouth would be good and organic traffic. Try posting some videos on youtube, everyone nowadays is on the site. After you post the video of your site on youtube, when the video ends, edit it and make an arrow pointing to the decription of the video to the right , put the link of your site their. I tried this b4 and it works pretty well i have to say =]

Traffic is best when its targeted. So I'd say organic SEO traffic and article marketing.

List traffic, without question. I use article marketing to drive traffic to my squeeze pages, which I test to get to convert at a rate of at least 40% before I'm even close to satisfied. Then cultivate a good relationship with your list members. Nothing even comes close to converting to sales better than list traffic.

Obviously, to get them on your list, you need an originating source, and I'm a firm believer in the power of article marketing. Nothing is more targeted as an original traffic source. I'd argue it's even more powerful than organic search traffic, but that's a contentious debate for sure. Still, article marketing traffic is so much easier to come by (and much faster) than SEO to get organic traffic.

      Hi John,

In your opinion, is the ultimate goal of article marketing to direct the people who actually read your articles via directories to click on a link to your optin, or to create backlinks which, over time, drive your website pages to the first page of Google? To me these two directions warrant totally different strategies.

I'm a big fan of viral backlink traffic,
specifically: giving away a free theme, widget, plugin, etc,
with a backlink to your site, like:

    "This theme/widget/plugin designed by: YourSiteHere"

In terms of conversion or just generally the best free traffic?

      Either way, affiliates/partners. No question.

I agree with John (Zeuss). Article marketing is more targeted and much better than organic. Organic traffic can disappear whenever Google feels like it. Your article pointing to your landing page/offer could theoretically stay up forever on the original article directory.

Also, don't forget, you can always change the content of your destination page URL to another offer, etc.

I agree with John (Zeus66) on list traffic. Of course you'll need to cultivate a relationship and nurture it over time, but once you do you'll get raving fans pretty much for life that will buy lots of things based on your recommendations (so you had better be responsible with what you recommend, because that can backfire on you!), and I'm sure pretty much everyone here agrees with the well-worn mantra that the money is in the list!

    Hi,

I'm new here but the single best would have to be article marketing followed closely by video marketing. Once posted they seem to be long term and will continue to bring traffic, anything that can bring an immediate response. Both words and images invoke an emotional response. The other methods are valid too...but I suppose we were looking for the single most method...
What I actually do now and which I learned from another Warrior member is post the articles I've written onto my blog then go to YouTube punch in the keyword related to my post and embed the video into my blog.

"Best" depends on what you want to achieve.

I have had 20k page views from Digg, but with zero conversions.

My best source of traffic is Guest Posting, unfortunately most people do it wrong so they go back to article marketing or ditch free traffic sources and go to PPC or whatever, which is a shame.

I would say through email marketing, but you needed the traffic in the first place for people to opt-in. So that's kind of like a catch-22.

If you are completely brand new to all of this, it would have to be article marketing. It's by far, the best FREE method to get your feet wet.

Whatever drives targeted clicks. You can buy a bunch of generic traffic from expired domains, etc., but you gotta slap a lot of stuff against the wall to get it to stick in this case.

Random visitors just melt your server to the ground unless you're pumping a really generic offer.

As Zeus66 said - list traffic is probably best for conversions because you have already started establishing a relationship with the visitor.

SEO is (as several others suggest) great too because while you don't have a relationship with that person yet, they at least are interested enough in your first blurb to let you continue the conversation. Sorta like dating - you meet someone for the first time/they either walk away, or let you continue the dance.

BTW - NO traffic is free. If it's from your list, you worked to build it. If it's from SEO, you built the rankings.

    All success,
    Gary

I think article marketing will always stay at the top or near the top of the list of free traffic methods.

    Why?

Generally you can get alot of content out there for FREE (although if your objective is amassing backlinks, then you won't see too much in search traffic, just serp positioning improvement)

On the other hand if your article(s) is/are well written, informative and interesting on top of having decent keyword density without sounding "spammy", you can get organic search traffic for months and years to come; for FREE also. (IMO)

Article marketing is great, and I love it.

But nothing seems to be able to beat a good video that has been bookmarked.

I would say traffic generated by targeted JV's with other people who have lists. Since 1998 I have yet to find a traffic method that can beat that in quality or quantity of visitors.

Now if you were asking, what's the best free traffic I can get if I am a totally green newbie with no connections, no thought leadership to leverage and no time to wait for organic search to kick in, I'd say blogging. I can start a new blog today and have 100 targeted human visitors by nightfall if I know what I'm doing.

With articles, you have to wait until the articles are accepted. With organic search you have to wait until the results of getting spidered, indexed and ranked kick in - IF they kick in.

But if you said what method has the best chance of longevity and works with any site, I'd say a well-crafted organic search plan, which includes a balanced emphasis on both linking, (which can partly be achieved by article marketing and blogging) and content (which can be repurposed for high profit article marketing when you're on the staff of the bigger publications, which can also be achieved by blogging.)

If you were looking at developing return traffic, IE a business with long-term life, I'd say list-building, which a good blogging, search, JV, or article marketing strategy ties into anyway.

Should I have to go with one traffic method for the rest of my life, to exclude all others it would be targeted JV traffic. I'd rather have one single email sent out recommending me from Allen Says to his every month than the top position on Google for any term. Targeted plus recommendation trumps Everything else.

For traffic I am going to have to go with SEO its natural traffic that just keeps flowing if you do it right.

But money wise I am going to have to go with traffic from JV partnerships they always produce the highest numbers on launch day that just blow my socks off.
