Forum recommendation badly needed

I'm a technotard extraordinaire, so when it comes to choosing a forum to use with my upcoming membership site, I don't even know HOW to compare them. (Or install them, but we'll get there in a minute.)

I'm looking for a relatively simple forum format...no fancy bells or whistles...but again, I'm a technotard so it needs to be easy to maintain as well.

Also, once I do choose a forum, I do not have the slightest idea how to install it. Now I do have a history of breaking websites, LOL, (just ask Chris Sutton ) so if someone could ALSO make a recommendation for an installer, that would be full of awesomesauce!

I use phpBB for my community and as far as I'm concerning I'm satisfied with all it offers.

There are some "I wish it hads" but as far as the essentials are concerned its just what I need.

I used simple scripts (Cpanel) to install it.

    NICE! Thanks!

Looking at websitetoolbox now - pretty cool and it's cheap, too!

Typo. I think you meant to type "I'm" instead of "it's" there.

phpBB is a great starter forum, and I used it for a couple of years myself. Probably is it can be prone to hacking attempts and I found I was up having to run their upgrades to fix a security issue at least once a month.

Simple Machine Forums (SMF) is another free one that is a lot better with what it provides and it's security. I only used it for a short time, but while I was it was great. It has a lot more features than phpBB.

vBulletin is the best in my opinion on the only forum software I use on my sites anymore. It's a paid product but well worth it. It gives me everything I need and more.

With regards to installing, it's not that hard. I can give you some install instructions if you like, or I can even help you personally with it. I've installed so many in my time I can do it with my eyes shut...

Hey George - if you've got an affiliate link, PM me with it. I'm definitely going with websitetoolbox.

      Hi Lisa

It's very nice of you to ask. However, I don't have one.

Another thing I like about them is if you dont pay they just put up an ad and let it be ad supported until you pay. So your forum is never down.

Lisa do you have a web hosting account? If so you probably already have a a couple of free forum scripts which can be automatically installed from your control panel.
