I have been to a few conferences over the last few years and amazed at how old a lot of the speakers are.

You look on their website and there is a beautiful picture of them 20 years ago then you meet them in person and they are a lot older.

Now this is not meant as a criticism but an observation.

What do you think?

I've been called grumpy. Now I'm an old fart too. What can you do?

So, you want to sell me another way to easily make "X" dollars in "X" days? ROFL too funny! IM success requires hard work and lots of time. Most newbies do not survive the steep learning curve. Anyone who says otherwise is probably selling you a fantasy.

I would imagine some of these speakers haven't personally updated their sites in many years. Just set 'em and forget 'em.

I used to see the same scenario in the mortgage and real estate industry,

We had an older lady in our office and I saw some new flyers on her desk and asked her "who the hot girl was in the photos, is that your daughter?". She said, "No, that is me".

    Oops.

Perhaps they're using the "new math" as applies to age?

      "40 is the new 20"

If nature hasn't cooperated, help it along.

      Unless they're being deliberately disingenuous...

      NDP

PS. I'm 31-1/2 years old which is probably causing my 35 yo son and 33 yo daughter some concern.

I think if that's what sticks in your memory most, then you may be missing the point.

That's not meant to be critical, just an observation.

I like old people. They've been around longer than us, so listen up. I dont know where my generation developed this disdain for our elders.

Gosh - I'm feeling older today for some reason.....

Like folks said - we don't have a lot of choice in getting older :-) Though if I were a bit more vain I might think about dying my hair - at Christmas my youngest son had a bit of a melt down in the mall so we had a little time out on a bench. A nice lady came over to ask if she could help with my grandson...ouch.

So we use our real pictures so people know we're real people, but we do have a bit of an ego, so when I lose my hair I'll probably still keep the image of my gray hair up ;-)

besides, Some of us have to doctor our pictures to look older - like me and Elmer Hurlstone. Otherwise with our Greek-god like physiques we'd spend so much time chasing off women (and men) that we'd never get any marketing done.

oops - did I say that out loud?

Agreed, but what I think the OP is getting at is the question 'should the photo reflect recent history?'

IM is also not the only place this happens - many of the photos of columnists in newspapers and magazines do not always reflect the current image.

Many celebrities look a lot different in person as well without hours of makeup, hair enhancement, etc.

You see the same thing on book jackets and in newspaper columns. People age on the outside - but on the inside they don't change. They still may think of themselves as the person they were in their "best" years and that is the image they choose to use. Remember the term "young at heart".

Why do people show their photos? Because they want you to "know who I am". For many people, "who I am" hasn't changed even though the looks have. But then, many probably just never get around to getting a new photo taken:rolleyes:

Top sellers in any field have the ability to sell to the "how I see myself" of their target market.

And with just a little touchup...

Well, scoff at "Old School" all you want, but without those "old school" methods of marketing, you wouldn't be looking at the best opportunity ever to get rich!

The basic principles of marketing never change - you find out what people want to buy and sell it to them.

The only thing that changes is the method you might use to reach them most effectively, and real marketers know this and adapt to the times.

Even Jim Straw, one of the greats of "Old School" mail order has moved some of his operation online.

Jack, I too have the body of a god. Only in my case, it's the Bhudda...

One reason for not updating the photo may be vanity. More likely, though, is a reluctance to dilute the branding value of a familiar photo.

Look at Dear Abby, or Ann Landers...

Both sisters bought the farm years ago, yet they don't look a day over thirty.

With me, it's "what you see is what you get". The image I used for my avatar to the left of here was taken late last year, so I still look pretty much the same. Only difference is, my hair is a little shorter and it's blonde now....again

I'll be turning the big "4-0" this year, but don't feel a day over 25. Thanks mom and dad for the great genes!

    Eh its all relative.

My 20 yr old fiance just said I was getting old because I'm 27 now, which means I'm almost 30!

Needless to say... I don't know many people who would say I'm "old."

I wish I could get the opportunity to sit and listen at a conference full of experience and things I did not know or ever would think of to get me further ahead. A conference where they had a combined experience of over a hundreds years yeah I want to scoff at that for sure how dare they.
is there an actual point to this thread?
