How do I handle such a (flame) comment?

Yesterday I sent an email to my whole list promoting a merchant's product, and I put my affiliate link inside and disclosed in the email that it is my aff link.

I got a reply from someone in my list. I won;t reveal his name or email address. This is what he said in the reply:

"Im yet to find anything that works on the net, as i lot of criminals run money making programs simular to this one & ill also bet that Kendrick isn't your real name."

Here's the thing. This merchant is one of those well known top Internet marketers. I won't say who he is because I don't think I should reveal the parties involved. I just think I should keep them anonymous here. But in my email to my list I did show his name.

I can't believe this person who replied me has the audacity to compare me and my merchant to criminals. Yes, I am using a pen name, but there is nothing wrong with using pen names for business. Even Bill Gates isn't really called "Bill". For all I know, this person who flamed me might not even be using his real name.

Should I reply this person? Or delete him from my list? How should I reply him? I think there is a risk that he may end up spoiling my reputation by comparing me to a criminal...

End of rant. I'm just *ahem* off that someone would dare compare me, an honest IMer, to a criminal.

the customer is not always right. This "customer" dissed me.

Press "delete", he is not your target customer.

So, you want to sell me another way to easily make "X" dollars in "X" days? ROFL too funny! IM success requires hard work and lots of time. Most newbies do not survive the steep learning curve. Anyone who says otherwise is probably selling you a fantasy.

I feel like ignoring it but I don't want him to post some article on his blog saying "Oh Kendrick Yi is a criminal blah blah blah..."

Maybe you're just over-reacting. Just ignore him, remove his contact to your list and MOVE ON.

EDIT: ohhh, you've deleted him already. Congrats

    Hi kendrickyi,

Like the others said, just ignore him.

But to make you feel better, I doubt this gentleman would be a top internet marketer. He may be using the name of a top internet marketer, or he may be pretending to be a top internet marketer, but I strongly doubt a top internet marketer would have so many grammer and spelling issues, and I doubt a top internet marketer would say they're yet to find anything on the internet that works.

(PS. Not that spelling and grammer is a sign of a good business mind, of course)

    cheers

I think that was a rude and uncalled for thing to say to you and I can understand you being upset.

However, I would bet that you lost or will lose subscribers after revealing the guy's name in your emails. I know I'd unsub in a heartbeat. That is a very unprofessional thing for you to do.

I did not reveal his name in my email at all.

    Don't let this shake you.

You need a thick skin when it comes to anything on the Internet, because people can act anyway they like (cowardly) and think they can get away with it - which they can for the most part.

It's just part of doing business on the web and it won't be the last time you get a nasty message.

Focus on something productive instead of on what idiots think of you.

Kendrick, welcome to a fact of life in IM - there's no pleasing everyone, no matter what you do or say! You are going to come across some real complainers and whiners, some of who will cuss you out and say really rude and uncalled-for things. Some of these cowards are really emboldened when they are hiding behind a computer, and will do and say things they'd never do in real life! As MJ remarked, you just need to develop a thick skin in IM, there's just no way you can possibly please everyone, regardless of how hard you try.

At first I thought Kendrick was referring to the rude customer as the well-known merchant. But reading it again the second time, I realized that Kendrick was actually talking about his merchant whom he is working with. He was actually talking about protecting the merchant's identity and privacy.

Good showing Kendrick. It shows that you are not just worried about your own skin, but actually you don't want the merchant's reputation to be tarnished because of association.

    Thanks everybody for the advice.

Sorry I didn't make my 1st post all that clear. I meant to say that my email to my list only contained the name of the affiliate (me) and the name of the merchant.

Just want to make it clear that I did not reveal the flamer's name and email to anyone. Only I saw it.

    P.S.
Well, William Henry "Bill" Gates III is Bill Gates' real name, for those who are wondering.

I guess it's too late, since you've already deleted and banned him/her, but what I would've suggested is just sending a professional reply, something to the effect of:

"I apologize if our e-mail came across to you that way. Rest assured we only recommend quality products to our subscribers. We will go ahead and delete your name from our subscribers list so you will not be receiving any more communication from us".

Of course, a little bit longer and fluffier than that, but you get the gist.

Stuff happens, people flame you, the more successful you are, the more it happens. Think of all the celebrities... hey, you're becoming a celebrity!

I know it hurts, you and I are real people. But somehow on the net, other people forget that. The best you can do is ignore it.
And I seriously doubt that the guy will bother to criticize you in public, most people are too lazy.

You can counter it with your own website with testimonials, etc so that if people search for you or your product, they'll see both sides of the story, with your side looking more professional.

    Here something intresting for you,

Why dont you email him back, and offer 1 month free coaching to him, were he can ask you questions and you will help him, see i always like to turn negativity into positive vibes.

That way when you help him, you can use him as a success story in your list and then he might even post a nice post on his blog about how you restored his faith in IM,

Because you have to remember im still a noobie but the amount of stuff ive bought and tried thats failed it does make you think all people do is cash in.

One guy whos list im on, sends me 2 emails a day trying to sell me stuff doesnt send one email with good quality free info im still on his list becuase i like emailing him back and saying 22 sales pitchs this week and not one bit of free info from you....

So maybe this is an option as the famous saying goes

That's a very good point, but I realize he might either be unteachable or stubborn so he's not really worth my time and I'd rather throw him out of my email list than spend time trying to convert/change him.

The problem with this approach is that many of them will accept it then request a refund anyway.

Sometimes, you just can't win no matter what you do. With experience you can often spot those scenarios before you invest too much time and can choose to draw the line and move on when YOU choose to do so.

    Cheers,
