Is it true that when you purchase a domain name, and only pay for 1 year at a time, that google don,t look favouribly on this, and give preference to domain names that people have paid for 2 or more years upfront.

That is something that used to be bandied about. Google does provide weight to domains over time but that is because older sites prove their value by remaining online. You could register domains for 10 years each but a new site isn't going to profit much from that so I wouldn't advise it.

The thinking about long term registration seemed to be:

Google values older, established sites....and if I buy a long term domain google will think I have an older, established site and reward me with higher rank.

Truth is, you can't manipulate time.

Dear April: I don't want any trouble from you.
January was long, February was iffy, March was a freaking dumpster fire.
So sit down, be quiet, and don't touch anything.

It's just one of the things to take into consideration. There are many other factors that affect your ranking.

sure google will not publish their secret sauce.. but the evolution will naturally takes the ranking algorithm to the next level in sophistication and complexity.. think about how many ways marketers have been trying to game SEO and then think about how many factors google has to used to counter act those tricks... so short answer.. no evidence.. just speculation

Well, wasn't that just some slight of hand.

Don't worry about it - we might be using it but we will never really tell you if we are or not.

If I was selling domain registrations to you I would certainly recommend it and tell you that it would help you rank better. I might even make it the default on my domain name buying interface.
