1and1 - did GoDaddy spoil me?

Okay, after hearing about 1and1's .biz freebie special, I registered one as I got my account and havent heard a peep. I can't log in until they send me my login info (it won't let me type the domain and password)...

GoDaddy sends out info in seconds.

Does it take 1and1 awhile?

I am anxious to put that domain into action.

Also, I know how to change my servers to my host in GoDaddy, but is it that easy with 1and1?

    Hi Tiffany

I have used one and ona UK for many years and they are very good. But when you set up a new domain they do take their time - sometimes up to 48 hours.

When I use bluehost it is almosy immediate.

I'm sure they will come good for you

    Hi Tiff,

They use to be really good about setup time, but this past year, I've had to wait over a couple of days a few times.

I don't know what their problem is, but I know their support stinks. No one speaks english either so it makes it tough to understand them.

As far as changing the DNS settings go, it easy peasy! You can click on DNS button in the toolbar of your admin area.

Just do your self a very big favor once you get in there. After you set your DNS, make sure you click the "check DNS" only after the initial setup. If not, it will be reset automatically, and you'll have to wait again.

There is a tiny arrow icon where a drop-down window appears if clicked. You can do things that way.

    Hope this helps ...

In my view, 1&1 are the worst possible hosting company I have ever come accross. The company I do some stuff for hosts with them.

Everything to do with domains takes an absolute age . . .and their Philipino support is worse that awful . . .

I agree with your comments Kevin.
One and One is dire........... I could rant on for ages about their lack of support, losing domain names and not having decent access to various things on a hosting acccount......... etc...... but it would be a waste of my time and anyone elses.

I just throw a free $140 their way every year in the hope that they don't bugger up the domain names that I really need to keep registered. So far, they are not doing a great job.

      Marks out of "10" for "101" = -1"0"-1 total = -101

I can only name one webhosting company worse than them "UK2.NET" now they can't be beaten on stupidity!

Unless of course, you others, know differently.

    I had a total nightmare with 1 and 1.

I had a couple domains expire that I wasn't using and they charged me for it. So I paid the fee and said I don't want this domain renewed anymore. Somehow that became a big headache so I said fine here is the money for the expired domains and delete them from my account.(about 4 domains).

They deleted every domain in my account.(including ones that had not expired yet. A couple which were quickly snapped up and listed for sale (and sold).

I just found godaddy to be more resonable and less anal when you don't want to renew anymore.

This should have been simple, but they made it such a big problem and then go and basically give all my domains away which were paid for. On top of that I still got billed for all the domains...

I have domains expire with godaddy, they try and bill and if I don't it expires...no problem. one and one done keeps billing you and as I found out is very aggravating to deal with.

      GoDaddy for domains, NOT hosting.

Never register your domain with a web host, Never host with a domain registrar.

Leave the specialties with the specialists.

      Good luck!

    * I was a 1 and 1 customer many years ago. You will soon discover that they have a very quirky way of doing things. You'll also discover that the wait time for any service is unusually long. I finally got fed up with them and closed my account.

I was also a 1&1 customer many years ago, before I knew better... I took advantage of their free domain offer but then canceled the account a few months later (or so I thought).

1&1 automatically sold my account to a collections agency 2 years later without my knowledge, no email, no phone call nothing. I thought this was canceled long ago...

The guy on the phone was yelling at me when I tried to tell him what happened. Seems that at the time there were over 2,000 accounts or so that were in the same boat as me.

    They are terrible...

    Mike Hill

PS. I don't know why more people wouldn't look into getting a reseller hosting account and just use it all yourself. I pay $497 a year and have a crap load of domains. I'll be going to a dedicated server soon.

Having your own reseller account is awesome... best customer support I've ever experienced and my domains get setup within 10 minutes

I register all my domains at 1and1. I love the free privacy for life and cheap domains ($6.99). They are slower than GoDaddy but it'll get done (you won't lose the domain). I normally get my first email around the 12 hour mark. Then the final email confirming the invoice arrives around the 24 hour mark.

Been using them for years and had no problems at all. But you do need patience and there isn't any phone support.

      Tiffany...

This is exactly why I am moving all of my hosting to hostmonster/bluehost. It took GoDaddy forever to add subdomains, account changes, etc. I don't like to wait. Changes are instantaneous with Bluehost/Hostmonster. At GoDaddy you get the domain within a few minutes or so. It just takes forever to make any changes to that domain.

While I will keep my present hosting account with them... only to host my jjpmarketing blog... I won't add any more stuff there other than domains. But that waiting 2 days for a domain to be active...

That is terrible. I would keep your domains with GoDaddy. I am keeping my domains there mainly because I love their interface for domain management and transferring that many domains would be costly. Some have said Namecheap is good as well, but I don't know how long it would take to activate a domain with them.

I have used 1and1 for a few years now, about 10 domains and have never had a problem they didn't solve on the phone.
When I had difficulty understanding or getting through to an "answerer", I just asked to speak to a supervisor and got to talk to a native English speaker. Asking to speak to a supervisor usually takes you from a heavily accented third world "text reader/page surfer" to an native English speaker with most companies in my experience, EXCECPT sometimes if you are call outside of normal business hours.

I am thinking about hostgator and a reseller account.

I recommended 1and1.com to you, Tiffany, for domains (.biz = free) on another thread. I have never used them for hosting and so I cannot recommend them. However, I have had no issues with them in terms of domain registrations. Yes, they are slower to get back to you on them when you first order the domains, but I can live with that for a free year.

I think most of the issues people here are detailing have to do with their hosting. I'm happy at HostGator for that.

1and1 is horrible and it is extremely difficult to cancel services or move domains. It takes AGES to get an answer to even the simplest question, which is why I left them (which was also a nightmare). In the end, I just let some domains go to keep my sanity.

I had a similar deal with 1 & 1. I was trying to register some domains for an imminent launch and thought I'd give them a try.

It too 14 hrs to get my info and another 12 for them to register the domain names. 3 of which were gone by the time the got around to it.

Funny thing is, without the login information provided by these guys, you can't get back in and cancel the domains and they are on automatic renew.

They are a bad dream for me. But everyone has their own hosting stories. Don't they?

Mary - Yes, I received the email this morning about 1and1's price increase. 1and1 used to offer domains for $5.99, and now (beg. in November), they're increasing prices to $8.99. I wonder why...

What I like about 1and1 is that they provide free private domain registration. Most other domain registrars (i.e. GoDaddy) charge extra for private registration.

        Hey Mobility,

No, I didn't realize they offered the private registration for free. Dang lol. I could have done that with them for the past 3 yrs. Live and learn I guess.

        John,

I wouldn't say most of the problems with them were hosting related. I know mine weren't.

I only order domains with them, and they are a nightmare to work with.

With them raising the prices, I'm not sure it's worth using them anymore.

          I used to use them.

It just seemed whenever I did a domain name with them there was some sort of problem.

They did not make it easy to do anything and when I got my hosting through them it seemed even more difficult.

Now I use Namecheap and I have a reseller account at Hostgator and it works great.

I can purchase a name, set the dns, set up a new account for hosting and have access to the site within 5 minutes. Yes that is correct 5 minutes.

They seem to get instant propagation on the dns settings and as soon as I am done I type in the domain name and there is my site as it should be.

          I love this combination.

          Mary,

I've ordered about 50 domains from them and have had one problem, which I called about, got a real human being who spoke English well, and it was resolved quickly. I guess the lesson is that you're going to have a spectrum of experiences with any company that deals with a lot of customers. It would be a mistake to take the handful of experiences laid out in this thread and extrapolate anything from it. Sample size is way too small, and obviously the most vocal will always be the ones who had bad experiences.

I highly recommend NEVER using 1 and 1.

    Huge company horrible hosting.

My clients who pay to use them have had to find new hosting because their hosting is so bad and terribly slow and their proprietary control panel sucks as well.

I tested them and my own conclusion is that only people who do not know better would use them ;-)

Though not long I have compiled a list of companies that I would not recommend people host with:

    1and1
    Godaddy
    Hostgator
    Dreamhost

Though most will not have issues with the latter two in the past they have some hidden policies that can destroy a business with higher resource needs. Not sure about the present but when I spoke with them and asked them the hard questions back when I was researching hosting companies to recommend they did not pass.

    My own preferred solutions are:

    www.theplanet.com
    www.softlayer.com
    www.aplus.net

Holy cow! Well, I won't recommend them again. I've had no problems with about 50 domain reg's, so go figure. I found the order process to be simple, I never got charged, and the DNS changes I made to point each to my HostGator hosting account went through within 24 hours each time. Maybe I just got lucky.

        Same here John.

Tiff, on the phone number for customer support it is 1-877-Go1and1 and it is open 24 hours/7days a week.

You can just hit 3, then 3 again on your phone real quick to go straight to customer service and they always stayed with me until any problem was solved. (just minor things mostly my fault)

I've got around 70 domains with them and never had a problem with their service.

They will be expanding to add even more on the 28th of this month but sent out an email letting me know and this was the first time anything like that has happened in the 2 years I've registered domains and hosted with them.

Their hosting is easy and I've rarely had to wait long for new domains but that may be because after the first five that came with my developer's account, the rest were add ons.

They've got a lot of deals with free domains and stuff and pay their affiliates to paypal on time.

After reading this thread it would appear to me that 1and1 are resellers. Domain and web hosting resellers.

They perhaps have an account with a domain name provider (that seems to provide a reasonable although basic services, from my reading of the posts) and an account with a hosting provider (who seem to be diabolical in almost all respects).

I just hope that none of these companies operate under any other names that have not been mentioned on this thread. I'd hate to spend money (and risk my business, or any part of it) by paying to become part of this shambles.

Just my thoughts - and I sympathise with fellow Warriors who are experiencing difficulties with the provider(s) in question.
