Hostgator Suspended My Autoblog Due to High Server Load

56 replies
Warriors,
This is my second time that my 2 wp automatic blogs got suspended by HG due to the same reason "high server loads" These blogs are running under HG's shared hosting server.

I am using "automaticblog" wp plugin and it was set to 1 article a day but still got screwed up. So, for those who are autoblogging lovers please be aware of this issue if you are using HG shared hosting.

If you are posting more than 2 posts per day I recommend you to install WP-Super-Cache plugin which helps to greatly reduce the CPU required to run a wordpress blog and can help you to have more traffic while using less CPU. It's free.

    One other tip. Hostgator only allows 25 consecutive CPU processes on their shared servers. They now offer a VPS solution which is far more cost effective than multiple shared accounts and has full unrestricted cpu processes. You are then only limited by speed, ram, etc.

    I just consolidated a ton of shared servers into one of these for autoblogs.

    All the best

    Actually I been considering to get one (VPS) from HG but

      In my case yes, all my autoblogs has 1 to 3 paid banners or text links placements for 6 months to 1 year. I can't kick them easily...

      As was said in an above post, if using WordPress, just install the WP super cache plugin.

      I was about to get kicked off my shared host when they suggested that I install that plugin. After I did they said everything was fine. I've even added many websites since then.

      I don't use an autoblog either.

        I think if you have 5 to 10 wp blogs or autoblogs installed on your shared hosting server that would be fine. But if you have like significant number of blogs running at the same time it would be wise to get VPS or even DS
        to protect them.

        I hope so too... Either way I still have to get VPS
        and don't rely on that plugin.

      I thought generally speaking host gator has unlimited bandwidth and disk space, even on their cheapest webhosting plans. You probably don't need to worry if you are populating your own blog with information and it isn't automatic.

        Bandwidth or disk space isn't the problem - it's the server load. Completely seperate issues. Regardless of auto-populating or not, once a website, any website starts to use any CPU, the "unlimited" hosts will have a problem.

          @Gama

          What autoblogger script were you using?

          @WP Super Cache
          I began using this with my autoblogs, but I found out that it was affecting my automatic commenting in a bad way. For allot of my automated postings I have automatic commenting too, and when WP Super Cache is turned on the cached pages do not reflect my most recent comments. So this defeats the practice. I want those spiders to know about my new content!

          @Hosting
          I'm partnered with pacifichost.com to provide hosting to my customer base at a discount, which is autoblog friendly, because they know about my product and contacted me for partnership. If you PM my I can get you my userbase's 25% off first billing cycle.

          Other wise I use HostMonster for my autoblogs and experience no issues yet. (6 months +)

    Running multiple Wordpress blogs can be very demanding. A VPS may not be necessary - instead you could look into 'semi-dedicated' hosting which is the same as shared hosting, just less accounts per server so you get more cpu power. Prices range from $15 - $25 per month.

    The problem with shared hosting is not always just your account. Most hosts (and I say most, not all) tend to pack way more accounts on the server than it can realistically handle. 99% of the time it's never a problem because average joe that purchases one of their shared hosting accounts won't make a blip on the server.

    With some software however, the CPU usage rises ever so much - in this case you might only be using 1% or 2% of the entire CPU, but for a packed server, that causes a problem. Because they can't risk the other 999 accounts on the server, they stop you.

    Give the cache option a go, but keep in mind that if it's not enough by their standards, you will most likely need to look at VPS, semi or total dedicated.

        Depends on the host. Lunarpages for example just shut you off and send you a generic email with absolutely no information other than "due to server load". This means your website is offline until you get it fixed or upgrade to a plan they say is required.

        Others, usually the smaller companies, will send you an email first asking you to make some adjustments or upgrade your account. This at least gives you a chance to try to fix it, and if not you can upgrade all while your site is still online.

    You could always shoot their support a quick email and question what their proceedures are in relation to this issue - ie will they warn you first or shut you off. I never left my websites with HG long enough to find out, I moved then when they grew so as not to have any hassles...

      I can vouch for pacific host, they are fresh and looking for good pr and new business, and already told me that they would like to host for my customer base(autobloggers and automated content users.)

      I would explain that my customers might buy 30+ domains a year.
      Because they are new and trying to establish their long-term brand, so they will be slow to generate bad pr for themselves, even in autoblogging circles. This is why they will probably be slow to suspend.

      But any any hosting provider will suspend your account wen copyright infringements are filed against you through them. Because they are your host, they can be legally accountable so its common practice to suspend your account until the content is removed... This can be very annoying, but I learned that being cool and just removing the content is all they want you to do, then they will re-activate your hosting profile asap and it will be business as usual.

      Other than that I can vouch for having a very good experience with Hostmonster. I also have an IXwebhosting account but I really like cpanel, and they have a custom administration panel that isn't as good in my opinion.

      We (D9 Hosting), don't auto-suspend, we always notify the client before hand advising them what changes they can make to reduce the load. But you'll find that almost all shared hosts will either suspend you, or ask you to make changes to your scripts if they are using a lot of resources.

      At the end of the day, if a script is a resource hog, then any half decent host will need to take action to safe guard the performance of the server for the other users. So if you've been suspended by one host, moving to another without making any changes to the script is likely to lead to the same course of action.

        I've got the opposite problem. "Bad neighbors" on my shared server on my SEO Hosting account through HG are making my site painfully slow. It often takes 30 seconds or more to load and I'm often getting database connection errors. I've been contacting them to request to be moved to a faster server and it's going nowhere. Very frustrating. Any ideas? VPS just seems like too much work for me needs.

            If you get the 512 VPS from WHT you can get a upgrade to 768MB and 60GB with 1TB bandwidth for $24 the first months and the $49 a month no contract. This includes setup, sever hardening and fully managed phone or email.

            For those using HG and they say you get all these "resources" etc the 60gb anf 1TB with this VPS is "TRUE" resources and not overselling like HG do. My server sits at .1 to some time .5 load most of the time and when you see this

    High server load by an auto blogger plugin points to bad coding. They're probably not closing sessions when they should, there's memory leaks in the code, etc. Either way, for a serious business, it is not wise to run on shared hosting. Look into the VPS option, or if it'ss worthwhile, get your own server and colo it.

      Which is why I'm wondering why people are advising 'page caching' plugins.

      I'm not a coder, so how do page caching plugins fix plugin processing issues?

        I believe it creates a html static mirror of your pages, preventing wordpress from using php code execution to pull content from the database everytime.

        What I dont like about caching though is if you have active commenters, or comments, then they tend to not appear in real time (as you approve them), but rather you have to wait until the site is recached.

        There is also http compression:

          Anyone that has a site out there to make money, should NOT be using shared hosting. Period.

          Get a VPS. Cost wise, after you have about 5 - 7 domains, the cost is about the same anyhow.

          I pay about $70-$80/mo for a memory upgraded VPS with HostGator, and have had ZERO problems.

          I have guaranteed CPU and Memory, so even if I have bad neighbors, they can't influence my CPU usage, because they are limited as well.

          I always run WP-SuperCache on all my sites, and cuts my display times from about 5 seconds down to about 1 second. It's great for Search Engines, and it's great for customers.

    To avoid a bad experience for your visitors, instead of them seeing a dead webpage, you can send a cache copy from Google by adding a db-error.php file in the wp-content folder (for Wordpress users, obviously). The file should have this in it:

    <?php

    $host=$_SERVER['HTTP_HOST'];
    $uri=urlencode($_SERVER['REQUEST_URI']);
    header("Location: http://google.com/search?q=cache:$host$uri");
    exit();

    ?>

    At least, you won't loose your visitor as fast as a dead link.

    Hope it helps.

      Bluehost, like Hostmonster, use SimpleScripts which like fantastico is an auto installer for tons of scripts. It works faster than fantastico and seems less error prone.

      You don't need fantastico, just use simplescripts!

    If you check out web hosting talk about web hosts who offer "unlimited" space, network and cpu this is one of the chief complaints. That unlimited is not unlimited. Stay away from web hosts who offer unlimited as it's strictly a marketing ploy.

    If the automation is handled by cronjob and the cronjob is run at low activity times you should be able to stay under the radar.

    I think its having the automation tied into wordpress's psuedocron (which runs when the blog is accessed) that causes the server to over work itself.

    Also I've not had any problems running with hostmonster yet. But I do use a cron system rather than psuedocron

    If you are posting more than 2 posts per day I recommend you to install WP-Super-Cache plugin which helps to greatly reduce the CPU required to run a wordpress blog and can help you to have more traffic while using less CPU. It's free.

      Bluehost will suspend you for high CPU usage, server load, or too much mySQL database activity. I wouldn't recommend running an autoblog with Bluehost unless you want it shut down without warning.

  • I suggest hasweb as a host they have phenomenal service and up-time and will warn you first unlike, GoDaddy or HostGator where they close the account and ask questions later (if that).

    Big Hosting Companies like this it is becoming apparent that they do not care about their customers and their needs, it's all about upgrading you to a dedicated server these days. Which can run you in excess of $100+ per month. I prefer smaller companies who actually value their customers and care about their satisfaction.

    WP s notoriuous for loading the server. I am thinking of removing my three blogs from my sites (or atleast two of them). Everyday I receive root email about server load.

    One blog is very slow loading ...

    I installed WP cache plugin until I manage to remove them. So even with your VPS problem persists ... only that your account won't be banned.
