Does Anyone Know Anything About Gmail Advertising?

I saw this video online about a way to show up an ad in Gmail every time someone sends an email with a specific phrase. For example, if someone typed in the phrase "I need to lose weight" in an email, your ad would appear. Does anyone know how to do that?

Gmail shows ads based on mail content. I think they are the normal ads which appears on others sites. You may try adword for this, to advertise on gmail.

I've heard of one technique that's a bit sneaky where as soon as an email pops into your inbox from a marketer with a huge list, you find a completely random sentence from the email that no one would ever bid on...

You then set up an ad campaign for that random keyword phrase promoting your product, the idea is that your ad will show up in thousands of peoples gmail accounts who are also on that particular marketers list.

The clicks should be really cheap as well because no one else bids on them.

Not tried it myself so not sure if it works or how effective it is.

    Cheers,
    Danny.

Thanks Danny. That is what I was talking about. The question that I have is, is how do you make your ad show up for a keyword phase that shows up in an email?

sneaky indeed, it's literally piggybacking on all the big marketers lists.... sneaky but oh so sleek. Thanks for the tip - that's a keeper that opens a lot of different variations.

I owe you one emergency donut hehehe

    It's actually quite easy.

You target mail.google.com in the content network within your adwords account.

Just do a search on youtube for "gmail advertising".
There is a nice video on there explaining it in detail.

    Hope this helps.

      You are exactly right.

This is actually quite easy to do.

I have tested this method before and to be honest, I think Google needs to work on this a bit.

My ads are not always are targeted as I like.

Also, in my testing, Gmail traffic has a lower conversion rate than normal.

That could be for a number of reasons, but I have tested hundreds of campaigns and strategies on the Content Network and I believe the jury is still out on Gmail targeting.

      Just my 2 cents

My ads don't even show up at all. I sent myself tons of emails using my keywords in the subject and the body, but none of the ads ever appeared. They've been running for days and have no impressions at all. I even tried adding some slightly more popular keywords and still not a single impression.

I think that is a setting in google adwords to allow you to control that.

If your ads aren't showing up, maybe you are targeting too broad of a keyword and not bidding high enough.

I've tried this with ALL the big gurus physical addresses, which was supposedly a "sneaky ninja tactic", but didn't get a single impression. And my bids were HIGH.
I've also tried it with some niche specific stuff and the best results I got was from xbox stuff using terms in the subject of the email. words and phrases in the body seem to matter less?
I had a campaign with the kw "my xbox is broken" which displayed my ad with an email where I put this exact phrase in the subject. Another email with the phrase only in the body didn't show my ad.

But that was when I read the email, not when I write it, (like Ryan(?) says).
It's not like your ad pops up when you're writing or sending an email, at least not for me

I suggest getting the e-book GMail Riches at www.gmailriches.com

This is an e-book written by Brittany Lynch.

    Ready for a crash course.

Signup for your competitions mailing list. Keep an eye for a sentance or couple of words that they always say in their emails. Could be the opening, like hey there, so and so here or whatever. Just look for a specific term they in most if not all their emails to their lists. (This is a key part to your success and you will be bidding on that term with either the "" around it or [] around it, to cut down PPC costs even more and target very specifically those you are seeking)

Next step is to head over to Google Adwords as, it is set up using Google Adwords content delivery. You would target mail.google.com in the content network. You only want to target this in the content network and on the mail.google.com network.

You then bid on the exact phrase that you found in the competitions emails. This way whenever one of their emails is sent and read, your ad should appear. This way you are piggy backing off their list, and keeping your PPC costs lower because odds are you are bidding on a keyword term that no one else is, and you are bidding on it to only one content network, Gmail.

    Hope that helps,
    Sylvia

My Adwords spending tripled without me noticing only to find
that most of the clicks came from Gmail. I disabled that
channel right away because these were not converting
at all. I don't even know when they opened that channel
and I wish I was paying more attention.

So keep the low returns in mind--at least for me they
    were low converting clicks.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but does this still work? Seems like Google will kill your ads and deindex your site since your landing page will be irrelevant to the keyword phrase you bid on? So if you bid on some guru's address that is displayed at the bottom of their emails "123 main st, some city, CA" and your landing page has nothing to do with that address, Google will kill it?

I'm sure that there is a way. Also, I had seen a video once that shows that whenever some unsubscribe from a guru list, an ad shows up from another guru saying that you should come join my list. I haven't executed this myself yet, however, one day I do plan on using this.

Your site has to be relevant to the verticals you specify. Otherwise, it will get booted.
