Made private? I tried to make a Mediawiki install with special privs on accounts, and as it turns out, that's not what a wiki is designed for. I ended up going with Plone to make a wiki (tho it's not easily setup that way) so I could make sections private and only give access to certain users in certain areas.

However, if you don't care about the users, but just want to be able to password protect it, I'd suggest just making a protected directory with your web control panel and installing Mediawiki.

I really liked Luminotes.com as a no frills wiki style group notebook. Unfortunately that is "liked" past tense because the feller is shutting down the hosted version for lack of users.

However, he does offer a complete download of the source code if you wanted to still use it. (I just wish it was in PHP instead of Python)

Wikidot is both good and free.
