What is essential to your home office?

For those working full-time from home, what do you consider essential to internet marketing from your home office? I'll be making this transition soon, and want to make sure I'm ready because the place we're moving to is a remote part of the Appalachians and I won't be able to just take a quick run to Office Depot, LOL.

I'd sure appreciate any opinions on this!

I'm pretty okay as long as I have my internet connection, a supply of ink (I print a lot of stuff), paper and pens & pencils. Oh, and a calendar.

Eventually I plan on getting a whiteboard or two but the clipboard and paper I keep on the desktop works fine.

If you will be quite a distance from the stores, start developing a business relationship with one of the online sites for your supplies. That can be a lot easier.

I remember an episode of MacGuyver where he set up an entire home office using nothing more than a paperclip, the foil wrapper from a stick of gum, some wire cutters, and a pinch of fur from a wombat.

Oh, and get a whiteboard and dry erase marker. Doodling's fun.

Hmmm...I wonder if I could substitute some Elk fur? Or if the entire world would implode if I did that.

I have a monstrous whiteboard I got at Target during the holidays. And I have my netbook with wireless.

At first, I'll just have a separate room in the house. Eventually though, I'd love to turn one of the outbuildings into a working office.

And I loathe television...wouldn't even think of having one in my office.

Apart from all the office equipment stuff which you will select to suit your personal needs.

I think discipline is essential for a successful home office , simply because it is easy to get excited about the change and not get anything done because you get lost in the excitement of the change or the nonsense that is daytime t.v.

A great network is essential so that you can connect with others when you need to.

And unless you are really computer literate a great IT geek.

      Good luck with the change.

    Lisa,
I second the dry erase board - saves alot of paper for those more fleeting 'ideas' that come and go.

    There are un-remote parts????

A couple things. First, you need a good home-office assistant. Here is mine--Emmett. He's an especially good typist due to the fact that he has six toes on his front feet. I just can compete!

Okay, seriously--years ago a got a pretty big magnetic marker board (4 ft x 3.5 ft. It's got some kind of ceramic surface I think, so it erases easily and completely. I like the magnetic part though. Most screen printers (who can print magnetic signs for trucks) have 50' rolls of 3/32" thick, vinyl coated magnetic sheeting. You can often pick up scraps for pennies.

Anyway, you can cut out magnetic squares the size of business cards or whatever, and then write on them with a Sharpie marker to make little organizer cards you can move around at will.

Here is a big thing too. NOTE: I would try this in a small section on your board first to make sure you don't ruin it--like I said, my board has an enameled or ceramic-like surface to it. Test yours.

Consider making a list down one side of your board of the things you must do every day insofar as online marketing goes. Make this list using a permanent Sharpie marker. (Test a small area first.) The markers say permanent, but if you use just a tad bit of rubbing alcohol the markings come right off--at least on my board they do. Put a small checkbox next to each item so your list looks something like this:

      read email [ ]
      check forums [ ]
      read RSS subscriptions [ ]
      check sales stats [ ]
      write articles [ ]
      blog postings [ ]
      back-linking [ ]
      new pre-sell pages [ ]
      product development [ ]

You get the idea--whatever you do on a daily basis. That list is written in permanent marker. (Or, you can write the words on the little magnetic cards I mentioned above and place them to make a list.)

Then, as you complete each item put a check in the box next to it using an erasable Expo marker.

At the end of the day wipe the board with a dry rag and the checks will wipe off but your list will stay there. Doing this will help keep you on task and prevent you (hopefully) from checking your sales stats or emails ten times a day like it is easy to do--this is a huge time waster!

Sorry if I sound a little didactic--I used to be a teacher. It comes out once in a while. But doing this works for me. Maybe you can adapt something like that for your own use.

P.S. Lisa--So you're moving to KY? Was there a two weeks ago and saw pretty much green grass and no snow! A far cry from Michigan weather!

I use mine every single weekend to prioritize the projects I have coming up for the week, and to keep track of what stage each of them is at and what steps I have yet to complete. I'd be lost without it.

Ahhh well this is all down to the way you work! I would love to have my own room but sadly there's no space for that, so I have my own 'corner'. Which isn't too bad. When I bought a comfy chair it made a HUGE difference so that would be top of my list.

For me I honestly don't need much. The best I can do is to use LESS stuff, get my desk uncluttered, and get my mind focused. Apart from that I've been keeping my diary open so my to-do list in front of me, but really clean space is my friend when it comes to productivity.

    Lisa-
Having your office where you can't hear what the kids are doing is a great idea. When I tried working in the house, I constantly wanted to intervene with discipline, etc., even though my husband was there to handle it. Plus the kids, especially when small, know you're in the house, and it will take them about a day and half to figure out if they do x, y, or z you will come flying out of your office to see them.

My office is in the loft of a machine shed on our little farm. I can't see or hear anything going on in the house, although several times this winter my window has been pelted with snowballs.

My white board has been a good distraction for those times I have to have the kids in the office with me. Mine are bigger than yours, (5 and 7) and they got right with the program when they figured out "my" money would be able to buy them stuff.

I am very happy that you are going to be able to make this move. And it is very good that you and your husband still write love notes to each other. I hate to admit that I am very happily married, too.

I forgot to add the usual office supply stuff. For example, I use post-its a lot! They are dabbled all over my monitor. Sometimes I want to write something down real quick and don't want to get off my lazy ass to write it on my whiteboard. I've also got file cabinets. They are essential for keeping my stuff organized. Invoices, tax stuff, marketing stuff that I print out, it's all organized in hanging folders and manila folders.

I've also got a dart board and I put different pictures of people on it. It makes throwing the darts a lot more fun and it's a great stress reducer. I'm thinking about putting a pinball machine in there........

For product creation, a 30" Cinema display. (Warning: netbooks can't drive them to full resolution). This allows me to keep Word open for writing, and multiple browser windows or tabs open for research.

      For me:

      - a large uncluttered desk
      - my apple mac laptop
      - a 2nd monitor linked to my laptop (has to be large)
      - a quiet space
      - a stereo, for when I don't want to be quiet
      - wireless internet connection, for working outside in my backyard.
      - a timer, so I need to get up periodically for some exercise.
      - a white board (large), so you're not cluttering your desk with bits of paper

I forgot to add my little digital voice recorder so I can "write" at the beach or fishing pier...

I can just play the recording into my microphone to transcribe the audio.

I would say among the top 5 is a good multifunction machine that does fax/scan/print/copy.

There were so many times that the ability to quickly scan something saved me a lot more time/effort required to mail something, and times when an OCR of a scan saved me the effort of re-typing it.

My webcam (for both business and pleasure )

^ This one from Rod's list cracked me up! LOL!

For me, on my left right now is a desk lamp, on my right is a water bottle (a big one!), lotsa note pads and scheduler to track what im doing every single day. On the other room is a treadmill (I get a lot of ideas while moving about).

And oh, the last thing I do before I sleep is to jot down the things-to-do for tomorrow.

I tend to forget a lot especially if I get a good night dream.

I'm intrigued by the number of advocates for a whiteboard. I'm still not sold on what a whiteboard can do that my piece of paper can't

I am prepared to be convinced though.

Window on driveway side of home ( for fresh air & seeing deliveries, etc - or knowing
who to hide from in the case of uninvited guests who won't leave )

At least one USB external hard drive - so I can save important BIG data
( too big to go on disc an too permanent chance on a memory stick )
That way you dont worry if your puter crashes....and it will, eventually.

Spend your $$$ on a good chair. You'll be in it for hours.
Must be comfortable on the butt and the arms.
Sit in it in the store for about an hour. Notice the way
your butt & elbows feel. Does it recline? Might conside that
for leisure-learning vs. typing. Does it have a head-rest?
Can you get the arms under/over your desk/keyboard tray?

A good LED gooseneck or other adjustable lamp for writing.
Buy a dimmer so you can see your keypad in the dark, too.

I would suggest a decent amount of desk space. I am a not taker, and I organize my notes on a desk. Sometimes this gets overwhelming on my little desk, so the next office upgrade will be a big one.

I would also suggest a whiteboard. The easiest way to keep your to do's organized is on the wall where you do your work. Then, you can track your accomplishments and avoid getting sidetracked.

Way to go on the upcoming transition.
