Escaping the 9 to 5... My Quest For Independence

Hey all,

I just wanted to introduce myself and start playing around on here and seeing what I can find. I've had several friends that have made $$$ from internet marketing for a long time and I never gave it any real consideration until now.

Currently, I feel a bit overwhelmed with the massive amount of information that is out there on the subject. I've got a bit of information overload, and and just trying to find where to get started so I can fall on my face and learn a few things.

My real goal isn't to make massive quantities of wealth of anything like that. All that I really want are a few sources of relatively passive income that can generate between $1000 and $2000 dollars a month.

I'm a travel junkie and I know that with that amount of money I can live like a king abroad and have a wonderful time just trotting about the globe.

Anyways, I look forward to learning a little bit from all of you and hopefully I'll get to be posting on here year from now about the success that I'm having.

Thanks,
Erik

Hi Erik, and welcome to the forum.

You mention you're a travel junkie...why not focus your internet marketing endeavors in that area? Write about all the wonderful places you visit (travel guide) and recommend hotels, restaurants, etc. and get commissions on referrals...something like that.

Success tends to come easier when you're doing what you love vs. what you must to succeed.

That is definitely something that I have given a lot of thought to, unfortunately I'm a total noob when it comes to everything that has to do with making money online. I'm not quite sure where to start... should I be doing an blog, writing articles... where would be the best place to get started with working on building my skill set? Any suggestions on some material that I could read up on to help me get started?

BTW, I checked out your blog and there seems to be some great advice in there... I think I'll dig around and see what I can find

    Thanks Tina

    Hi Erik,
Sounds like you've got a good vision for what you need to do what you enjoy. Unfortunately information overload happens to a lot of us, so getting some solid foundations on where to start could really help.

One thing I will say is you don't need to spend a fortune to get started. In fact, there are plenty of free guides that will teach you how to setup and get running on Wordpress, which is what many people use for their niche blogs. I can't think of specific examples right now but if you did a Google PDF search you could probably find some.

Where you start does depend on you and what you want to do. Personally I started by building blogs and, if you use Wordpress, you'll find you pickup a lot of information as you go along. The good thing about blogging is, like Tina said, how you can write about what you enjoy.

    Good luck!

    Alright!
Well, it looks like I should just by a domain related to the subject that I want to start writing around (I think I'll start with traveling in SE asia considering I did that for about a year) and I'll just start getting information out there.

Thanks for the tips, and when I get the blog rolling I'll make sure to put it up on here.

    Thanks,
    Erik

    Erik,

Yes, getting a domain name is a good idea. I would start by finding out what information (about travels in SE Asia) people want. Then I would purchase a domain name related to that.

Once you have the domain name, you'll need to have that domain name hosted somewhere. I use HostGator for my hosting needs, and I'm happy with the service so far.

After the hosting is purchased, I'd probably set up a WordPress blog (you can do this in one click inside CPanel - comes with your hosting account) then start posting some of that wonderful information you learned while traveling in SE Asia. Maybe an article a day, or one article every two days.

People will start reading your blog, and you're gonna want to set up some way to collect their email addresses, so you can contact them later, after they've left your blog. A lot of people use Aweber (email management/autoresponder) for this. There are other autoresponder companies out there too. GetResponse. Infusionsoft. I like Aweber. It's easy.

How can you get people to give you their email address? Offer them something special (related to your subject - travel) that isn't on your blog. Then, when they sign up, give it to them.

There is much more you can do (and will do eventually, I'm sure) but that should be enough to get you started. If you're wondering when the money starts coming in, well...it comes later.

Just like with an offline business, you have to get the location set up and stocked before you can open your merchandising doors.

    Hope this helps,

    Tina

Being that your new to this all I have to say is that you must decide on something and make sure you TAKE ACTION! Many people have told me this and i somewhat ignored it but since then I made my very first sale on December 17th so Im no millionaire. I just know that once you find a system that you enjoy doing and are comfortable doing it, then you have something going for you. many happy days my friend and welcome
