WP MU blogs won't accept my email - what's wrong?

Why can't I build a blog on the WP Multi-User sites I'm finding?
Problems finding sites that work and need some second opinions.

I learned that you can set up your own blog on other Wordpress MU blogs and benefit from the site rank being generated by traffic from all the blogs on that MU site.

While searching for them, however, I keep hitting a brick wall. Links don't work, so there's no way to get to the registration page in many of the ones I tried. My email is rejected on those I can get to.

The majority that came up in my search are all Wordpress instructional blogs (providing help for WP-MU site users, such as offering plugins).

Then I came across a link that suggested that Wordpress MU blogs will soon be merged with the Wordpress 3 version, which I take to mean that there will be no more MU blogs - or maybe it means that all WP blogs will be MU blogs after that version is released.

Does anyone have any insight on this?

Thanks.

Sylvia

WPMU and WP do some things differently, like some differences in their database tables, the need for blogs on WPMU to have further security measures etc.

For this reason, some plugins would work on WP blogs but not on WPMU ones. With the merge this will be over. It is likely that a lot of pre 3.0 plugins won't work on either one and need to be updated.

But, you can be assured that if you create a blog on a WPMU install today, it will not go away or anything.

And for your purposes, you may want to search for WPMU signup pages instead of just WPMU sites. I am not sure what type of searches you run but you may find it helpful to check the authority (PR, age, traffic) of the sites you find and be selective in where you sign up (the more the better I guess, but it won't do harm to start with more useful ones.)

There are automation tools that help with these procedures (finding, sorting and signing up on multiblog sites) on BH forums, but I am not endorsing such approach.

It was announced about a half year ago (if not earlier...).

As always with WP - nobody knows anything until Matt decides to make it public

As for not beeing able to register a blog on certain sites that run on WP MU - maybe they don't let anybody register. (Just a guess)

I do not know what version WP MU is currently in, but WP single user is already in version 9.2.

Perhaps that was an old article?

I would be very surprised if MU and single user merged.

        Thanks everyone for your input.

        knowwow...

Very helpful, thank you for clearing up the MU vs basic blog issue. I'm actually searching for the phrase "wp-signup.php". I tried the general search and using a keyword related to my niche. The best results came from the niche version, as I found 3 out of about 8 that had the signup activated.

It was a bit confusing to see that after 4 pages of general results, I could not find any that would let me set up a blog, and many of them were Wordpress.org type sites. Maybe I just needed to dig deeper into the results to find some that are more generic, like maybe news blogs or something.

A marketing project that looked easy and promising quickly took a downturn.

        NateDesmond...

Yeah, not sure how old that article was ( actually I think it was a forum post somewhere - maybe even here. ). I didn't check the date at the time. I figured that regardless of the date, it either was going to happen or already had so the info was still relevant. And now, I'm wondering if the reason I'm not able to find as many usable MU blogs as I expected might be becuase of this change.

          Hi Sylvia,

I guess you will get better results while searching for inurl:wp-signup.php. This will give you the login pages you are looking for to create your accounts. If you´d like to get more results (more than the limit of 1.000 pages on google.com) just use advanced search and type in a date. That should work ;-)

          Have fun,
          cheers,
          Sven

Ok. Maybe someone can tell me what's going on.

I've been making my way through the results for WP-Multi-User blogs but out of about 20, I was only able to register and get a blog on about 3 of them. The problem: After entering my name, email, blog title that I'd like and hitting the "gimme a blog" button, I get an error:

"Sorry, that email address is not allowed!"

This is repeated on all the problem sites. So what's wrong? My email address is my own - it's not a free one. It belongs to my own domain. So I thought maybe there's something about my domain I don't know about, so I tried a different domain email and it still wouldn't allow it.

Is anyone else setting up multi-user blogs and if so, are you coming across this error and have you found a way around it?

I'd sure like to know, because I feel like I'm wasting a ton of time here trying to find ones that actually work.

            Thanks.

I'd just installed WordPress MU on a new domain. Not for other people, but for me.

My problem is not knowing when I should do a hub, a page on a domain or an entirely new domain/site for a particular niche.

Wordpress MU is very cool. There's only 2 plugins that I can't get to work with it.. one is the gallery builder one and ohz admin plugin that puts your admin navigation where it should be - at the top of the screen.

I wish I could start my server over again and just use Wordpress MU for all of my blogs. Would have really been nice to centralize everything with it.

I have come across several that are like that - obvioiusly, just for the individual. If you look down at the bottom on some of them, there is a link to "create a blog" - usually in the fine print.

Whether I use that link or actually get to a page by entering "wp-signup.php" after the URL, I'm having this weird problem.

I run WPMU on my site and am about to set it up on 3 more.

I can create new blogs thru my admin panel, but am not able to bulk create blogs as I get that same error message. Am trying to find a fix for it and came across this post. It's not too much of a drama for me as I can just as easily create blogs one at a time, and I don't have user created blogs.

If you go to the WPMU site you should find a list of sites running WPMU - try some of them - in particular I'd look at edublogs

I was seriously considering using WP MU for a membership site but being a newbie and all, I got frustrated when I couldn't fully understand how it works or if it would work in my situation. So I gave up on it and am searching for a different solution - including the thought of asking using to create a free blog on wordpress.com or blogger.com (the main benefit being more exposure for them and for my soon-to-be affiliate links).

Nothing is wrong. Registration for the sites your are having problems with have been restricted to certain email addresses. Not all sites are open to the general public.

Just because a site is MU, doesn't mean you can sign up. These are privately owned sites and the owners don't always allow random new people (the general public) to register.

I had a networked WP blog that allowed others to create their own blogs as long as they stayed to theme. Every day I removed 100 blogs about weight loss, viagra, etc...
Nothing but a pain in the butt... I imagine some others are experiencing similar results and disabled new accounts as I did.

Because of LFE (Link Farm Evolution) anyone who opens up a MU blog is hit by thousands of robot users creating and posting stuff which then makes the hosting company complain about over use of the cpu etc...

Most owners of these blogs simply turn off public registration or disable it...

I too run a networked WP blog but I've been overwhelmed with spam sites promoting viagra, adult related materials and more. I've been disabling access non-stop everyday till its not even funny.

You should consider turning off public registration
        like TrustedReviewer mentioned above.

ONCE UPON A TIME there was a Warrior named Bob. He was sad. And frustrated. You see, Warrior Bob spent every last nickel on Internet Marketing e-books. But nothing panned out. No traffic. No sales. He was one sad Bob. Then one day Bob found a bottle. He rubbed it and out came a Genie who granted him 3 wishes. For Wish #1 Bob asked for a pet Dragon. Wish Granted. For Wish #2, Bob wanted Warriors' websites seen by 53 million TV viewers, for under $5 per broadcast. The Genie said... (click here)

If you are trying to register at .EDU WP MU blogs (and i think that this is what you are trying) the public email domains are blocked. For example if you try to register at someschool.edu you need to have a myname@someschool.edu email address. In another chases is enough ANY .edu domain email address. This is made to block spam and blog registrations from others.

In other chases can be a similar block applied for a non-public blog offer.

Anyway if that helps you check out my ROCKSTAR BACKLINKS WSO in my signature. That will help you to get .edu emails but i don't recommend to use these blogs for spamming.
