Can I get your opinion on some logo concepts please?

Hey Warriors! Not sure if I'm posting this in the right category. If not, please let me know. I'm finally taking the plunge into Internet Marketing. Been studying it for a while, though I'm still quite a newbie.

I'm making a membership website for men's weight loss. It's geared towards obese men, but any overweight man could benefit from it. It's possible that wives, parents or girfriends may look at this too on behalf of their husbands, children or boyfriends. I'd be most grateful for any and all comments from men and women.

The logo concepts can be seen here:

Peter Douglas RAW Logo ideas for Men's Weight Loss Website

You can reply here on the Warrior Forum, or if you wish to do it annonymously, there's a form below the logos where you can submit a comment too, or just simply vote on the version you like best)

Thanks again!

The rest simply look ill-defined and having an outline upon a white background simply makes it hard to make out.

Out of all the options I like the first set. I don't think the artwork is strong enough in the others to stand alone. A basic rule of thumb for logos is that a logo should be able to work at the size of a postage stamp or on a billboard.

Also I think they typography is stronger on the first set. While I'm not in love with those fonts, they show some creativity and good use of color as oppose to the rest which seem to rely on the illustration to carry the logo. The other sets seemed a little phoned in as far as font and placement.

    Just one guys opinion.

Thanks, good point about the white background. I'm not too fond of that either. I've been looking at logos a lot lately, and those on a darker background seem to stand out the best.

I'm not sure which logos you were linking to... both those links go to the same picture. Unfortunately I had to make one large image with all the logos or they were scattered all over the page (must be because I'm not 100% proficient with Wordpress yet). But I think I know which ones you were referring to.

Initially, I was not all that drawn to the first set, but the more I think about it, that's the one I keep coming back to. But I wanted to see what others thought, rather than just me. Good point about a logo needing to work at the size of a postage stamp or a billboard - I'll remember that!

Like you said, the fonts may not be the best, but it does show some creativity and good use of color.

I got an anonymous reply from the form on my blog. He or she did not like any of the designs (and that's fine, I'm glad people are being honest). In fact, he/she said that they looked like templates. To be honest, they do tend to have that feel to them, although I like the idea of the 3 silhouettes. It just doesn't look "custom" enough. Plus, now I'm thinking it may not work as a logo at a really small size. But then again, I'm far from a graphic design or marketing expert. I'm just learning and REALLY appreciate all of the honest feedback. Thanks folks!

I forgot to mention... I do have some flexibility and can go back to the designer for a few more rounds of revisions. These are just the first ones.

Much as I'd love to hire a Madison Avenue advertising agency, it's just not in the budget. But I think that with some constructive feedback, my designer can come up with something suitable - whether it be based on one of the current designs or a totally new one. I decided to ask for other people's opinions before I go back to her. And I'm loving the feedback from all you - it's very helpful. Thank you!

Set 1 by a country mile, and if I had to chose a graphic I'd go with the bottom level of set 2. The others just didn't gel with me at all. I dunno...maybe I'm not a skinny man trying to burst out of a fat body (although I did look a little pregnant after Christmas).

I think the first set is the best mainly because is simple.

I think logos should be really simple, that's just me though.

I do like the images of the skinny guy coming out of the fat guy though, it's pretty good.

Your designer is pretty good. Go with set 3. Very nice concept. Please don't take set 1. It's too plain and boring. It's just not iconic. The logo for set 3 is memorable and the image is stuck in my head. For set 2, it's good but the typography isn't too great.
        *sigh*

I would not go with something a graphic artist did because for the most part they are unrealistic with their artwork. A normal person can make an absolute screw-up of design without him having to pay a graphic artist to do it specially.

My brother himself is good at art but he is absolutely bloody awful at design because he is way too impressed with his own ability and shoves way too much into it, when designing something you need it to be short, sweet and memorable...something that anyone can draw in a maximum of 15 seconds and something you can instantly recognise.

Set 2 man looks like he is either pregnant or has a tumour, not sure if that is a bad thing.

Set 3 looks like it was thrown together in 3 seconds on paint, the stick arms and legs do it no favours and neither do the non-backgrounds of the upper two.

At least with set 1 they can go up in the banner and after a time start to get recognised for what they should be, a good graphic should not always be iconic and that is just the kind of thinking that confuses the situation as it almost guarantees the producing of a graphic that is in itself too busy, until you have 50 years of legacy.

By the way, I meant the set 1 with both black backgrounds and the red background, the beige is too wishy-washy and the top four do it no favours due to the colour bleeding problems of having no solid background.
If you are going with that idea you need very strong colours and concept to make it work, no second guessing it.

I like the red, black, gold color theme.

I like the skinny man bursting to get out of the fat man, but that is not the graphic to show it! It looks like a hot dog or something I won't mention here...

I like the way the font changes from thick to thin in the first one, although I probably would use a different font.

Out of the three sets, I would choose number 1.

Wow, thank you so much everyone! I know the comments are still coming in, but so far, based on the comments here as well as those submitted anonymously on my blog, Set 1 (text only) is the top choice. As several of you pointed out, the concept is great, though the font choices might not be. This might be the idea I go with and have the designer develop it a bit further. It can be simple and effective. I think of the FedEx logo (and I see a lot of their trucks driving around) - that logo is text only, it's simple, effective, can be seen from a mile away and also looks good when it's the size of a postage stamp.

Clearly, the next most popular choice so far is Set 2, with the 3 silhouettes. Again, several of you have mentioned that the idea is good, but the design is not. To be honest, this was my favorite set when I saw the logo concepts for the first time. But it doesn't matter what I like, it's what will be the most effective.

Some of you have mentioned that set 3 is your preferred choice, but with a better design. When I first saw the 3 logo concepts, this was my least favorite. I didn't catch on to the idea at first, and was worried other people might not either. Plus, it may look a bit too clunky.... (not sure how to phrase it any differently).

But I will wait and see if any more comments come in. I truly do appreciate all of your honest feedback. It looks like whichever logo concept I go with, it will need to go through another round of revision. As they say, you can never please all of the people all of the time, but as long as the majority likes it, that's what I'll go with.

    Thanks again!

Personally, I think set 1 shows a little bit of promise -

set 3 looks like you're trying to teach people how to play Wii Fit

If you want an idea... the progression of the fat man to the thin man could work (in set 2) if it's used on its own without the text (or, have the text underneath - small, on one line) I can see where you're going with it (evolution of man) and I like the concept. But it's too jumbled when it's part of the logo with text.

    Word of advice...

If those are royalty free stock photos/illustrations, don't assume you have the rights to use that logo on everything from business stationery to websites, without a license for each use. For your own protection, ask your designer where they sourced the photos from and check the license.

Stock photos used in logos are STILL copyright of the original owner and the stock photo site. Which also means that trying to TM your logo would most likely be futile.

Also, listen to Tom for most things design related - trust me on this.

    ==== EDITED TO ADD ====

Don't assume your designer takes the risk for copyright infringement in the worst case scenario, the responsibility is also yours to check legitimacy of images.

==== EDITED AGAIN TO ADD =====

If you want to go with the 'evolution of man' theme... add the following stages.

Obese man sitting in chair eating a burger.... (before the first pic)
Man sprinting.... (after the last pic)

    Hey,

I like set 3. I don't like the abdominal proportions on set 2's fat man. Set one is really professional too, but it could use an image. An office member just mentioned that set 3 does look like a burger if you turn it sideways. Maybe that's why I like it. I like the that it's cartoonish and not too serious. It's imagery of the new thinner man emerging from the bondage of the fat man has so many levels to it.

    I'd go with number 3

The lower two images in set 2 are the best in my opinion, especially the gray scale one. The visual of the body changing is a good way to send a memorable message. Nice job. The top two images in section 2 would look better with a non-white background in the lower half of the logo.

I am not trying to be offensive but YOU are, I am just stating my opinion from personal experience.

There are many great artists out there who the opening poster could work with but he has to find them, I simply stated that 99% of them do not know the first thing about what people focus on and would rather show off their talent instead of actually promoting a site.

For a headline graphic to work you need it to actually be copy-able by everyone, like the superman logo, everyone knows what that looks like....

When you have a graphic that can be copied by everyone easily you then have to put your own stamp on it and promote it, if it is not instantly recognisable by a single bloody person you have wasted all your time.

First of all, I want to THANK all of you for your amazing feedback on the logo concepts! This is my first Internet Marketing venture, so I appreciate all of your comments and suggestions. It was REALLY close - in fact almost a TIE - between "text only" and "3 silhouettes."

Based on your feedback, I've decided to go with the "text only" version but using different fonts (a bit more masculine this time, though still a bit of a feminine touch as women may view this site on behalf of their husbands, boyfriends, fathers, etc). I promise not to keep coming back for endless rounds of critiques - this will be it! The next time I post will be to show you the final logo.

Incidentally, due to the overwhelming support for the "3 silhouettes" showing the transformation from a fat to a fit man, I've decided to incorporate that elsewhere in the website - perhaps as a banner or supplementary graphic. But not as a logo. It's a strong visual, so it will be used elsewhere on the website.

I'd be most grateful for any last suggestions before I go back to the designer and lock in a final logo concept. Again, this will be the last round of critiques. Thank you for your past comments and suggestions - they really helped come up with this current logo. Feel free to post a comment here, or do it annonymously on a form I set up below the image on a private blog post here:
