any harm or benefit to authorizing pingbacks?

I get hammered by spam comments all the time, from what I see here most of you all do as well. Most of us just delete the clearly self serving junk comments.

Why give someone a backlink when they didn't do any thing to "enrich" the conversation of our blogs.

What harm (or benefit) is there to authorizing a pingback?

Doesn't pingback mean someone linked to us from their blog?

If I authorize a ping back is that not tantamount to a reciprocal link?

I mean if someone leaves a comment (they're really lookin to get their link on my site) and that comment leads to more comments, answers or raises questions, generates or stimulates other participation... then I did get something out of giving the commenter a link back

... what do I get out of a ping back?
anything?

If you think that the link is not somehow irrelevant to the conversation then report it as spam. It would also help to install a spam blocker. For wordpress blogs, they usually offer Akismet which is a free tool. Also make sure turn on your spam blocker. A ping back is helpful especially when it comes to SEO and Google rankings. The purpose of pingbacks is they notify the blog directories for latest updates of your blog, thus helping your blog rise to popularity.

      OK, now I'm confused:

I know about pinging, we can set up our ping list within WP
we can ping the RSS aggregators by hand, or manually using pingoat.com or pingler.com

Are you suggesting that the pingback notices we get on our blogs (notices that someone has reblogged or republished our snydicated content) serve the same function if we did it ourselves?

hmm, ya got me thinkin: if we submit to social bookmarking sites, thats one level of back links, if someone other than us SB our sites (from their ip address) that "vote" for our content is supposed to count more than if we "blew our own horn"

so... if we "earn" a pingback (the hard way, by someone independent from us) does that "vote" count more then if we did the pinging ourselves (shameless self promotion)

      ??
      any thoughts gang?

Way back when, pingbacks were a way to tell another blogger that you mentioned/linked to them on your blog.

      The purpose was twofold:

First, it sometimes led to a conversation taking place across the two blogs as the bloggers posted their end of the conversation on their own sites and pinged the other site to let them know there was something new.

Second, as a side effect, it often led to real people following the pingback to the other blog, where the second blogger had a chance to add the visitor to their regular readership.

Like almost every tool, the spammers have corrupted the usefulness of pingbacks. Their automated tools spew indiscriminate pingbacks in the name of building backlinks.

About the only defense is to either moderate them or turn them off.
