Keywords Research: Not Enough Data. What Do You Do?

I really want to appreciate all the GREAT people of this forum.

The year is about two weeks old and I have discovered and learnt so much that I can say I have NEVER had it so good. I want to thank all those that have been posting about making money from Amazon as I have never looked at Amazon as an option before.

My question is this: When you do keyword research and you see, under Local Search Volume: "Not Enough Data." What exactly do you do? Do you abandon the keyword or there is something else to look out for?

Please help explain this.

Hi BollyTinTin,

I presume you're talking about the Google
Adwords Keyword Tool?

That being the case, you should take
those figures with a huge pinch of salt.
You see, Google only returns what traffic
was generated for paid advertising via
Adsense. In terms of actual traffic, the
value shown is the minimum volume, as
not all organic traffic is exploited by PPC
advertisers.

I use software called Keyword Research Pro
and Micro Niche Finder mainly to find
keywords with low competition, and then
look at traffic afterwards. I don't worry
about having to write dozens of pages of
content, I have my own method of grouping
keywords with low competition into themes,
and feed them into my Article Spinner for
lots of articles that are well written, and
keyword focused. individually these
keywords often don't have a lot of traffic
according to the Adwords tool, but added
together, it's a different story.

then I can rely on is my server stats for
retrospective research, it gives me the
keywords that actual visitors use to find my
sites. there are many I would never have
uncovered otherwise.

I use Keyword Discovery, but they are expensive. Nichebot is good for high traffic phrases, but I feel you want to go after low competition keywords with high conversion.

I generally use Market Samurai and Micro Niche Finder since they both pull their data from different resources. You can also enter the web address of a site that is ranking high for one of your keywords into the Google Keyword Tool and get an idea of what other keywords the site is using as well.

  Keyword research for what purpose? To assess viability of a market? To pick out a top 10-20 list for generating traffic? To assess PPC keywords for advertising?

Jeff, I think it is to access the viability of a market.

I have also read somewhere else that Google's adword tool can not be relied upon that much.
