HELP - Offline Client Wants and Affiliate Program for Their Book / DVD Set

Tomorrow I'm meeting with a client and they also want to know how I'd set up and manage an affiliate network for them. We need to define the specifics with them, but I haven't done this side of things yet, and am looking for feedback from experience, information, resources, URLs, etc.

I'm looking for scoping information (what's included, not included, etc.) and pricing information (components, prices (set up & monthly, commissions, etc.), etc.).

I don't expect to have all of the answers for them tomorrow, but I need to have somewhat of an approach and some pricing information.

Any information is appreciated / thanks in advance, Chris

Setting up affiliate programs for brick and mortar businesses is a genuinely rewarding, challenging, and unique experience. Good luck!

Will it be your responsibility to market this program as well? It's important to know what the marketing strategy to potential affiliates will be before you make any determinations on actual program technicalities.

If you're consulting with this business on their SEO as well, an affiliate program is a great way to build a volume of inbound links.

How will you handle affiliate signups? There's the obvious info you'll need to collect (payee name, tax ID, etc.) Just go to any affiliate signup (Clickbank) and use those fields. You'll need to establish a commission rate that's acceptable to the company you're consulting for.

Have you looked at pre-populating affiliate pages with certain info, or at the very least, generating unique affiliate URLs? Best practices, as far as maintaining solid link juice to a highly-valued 'money page', would be to slap an affiliate ID parameter at the end of these URLS (unique, of course, to each affiliate). Just have your server includes track these IDs and places that into the tracking cookies.

You do know how to create and administer MySQL databases, yes?
You'll need to track these ID's in your database for following purchases. Upon purchases you'll just need to collect this ID from the cookie you setup. Again, you'll need to discuss with the merchant how long you want these cookies to last for...pretty important.

I could go on and on about the technical, so just PM me for more.

Beyond that....it's all about marketing to affiliates like you'd market to the end consumer. Who will handle development of the creatives, etc.? Where are the best pools of affiliates to be found? Will these be other businesses that sell complementary services? Will these be consumers that have purchased before, and have a sphere of influence with likely buyers within?

We've managed and setup many affiliate networks and individual campaigns, so just ask away in PM. Would be glad to help.

That's a great solution, and so is HasOffers. However, the greatest (and one of the most valuable, depending on strategical needs) indirect benefit I have discovered in setting up affiliate programs has been getting links, and loads of them.

Problem with lots of these solutions is they leave very common footprints that Google can pretty easily detect. Now debate on this is still up in the air depending on who you talk to, but I leave nothing to chance with Google, especially these days. Google likely considers this scenario a paid link situation, and as you probably already know, Google says paid links are no good.

It's up to your discretion, really. Rigging up your own in-house solution isn't as hard as it seems, if you've got the ability to do it. If not, I can get you setup with something that is proprietary to you at a cost that's congruent to anything else you'll find off the shelf. Just let me know.

Jared, thank you for the recommendation - I took a quick look and it looks like it has a lot of good features.

Have you used it? Pluses / minuses?

Send me an affiliate link if you have one, so I can buy it through that it if we end up going with it.

      Thank you, Chris

      Thanks for that, Jared.

I checked out your Telekinetic Marketing website earlier - there's some good info. there and looks like a nice site in the making. TONS of great resources, links, etc. I'll definitely be going back there...you should publicize it more on WF...

Just a thought, but if you've never done it before it could be a pretty tough ask!

Why not outsource it (and make a nice cut simply being a middle man as it where) to someone like Alex Shelton:

He's a member here and great guy that managed George's Google Sniper launch? At the very least it may be a good idea to contact him for some professional advice. He can also put you in touch with/recruit a *lot* of potential affiliates, too.

      Tom - YOU ROCK!

THAT is what I am looking for!

I would have no problem doing that and would prefer (at a minimum) these two conditions to exist:

      1. someone who works in an open and collaborative manner; I'm teachable and want to learn what's involved, how to do it, etc. The better I understand it, the more effective I am in managing the outsourcing of it to a specialized expert.

      2. I'd prefer to "white label" the service under my brand, but would price it so we both make a profit.

I will reach out to him. I am sure this won't be the last time I run into this situation...

Also look at networks like Paydotcom or Shareasale where you may be noticed by existing affiliates. Shareasale will also pay your affiliates which reduces time and paperwork.

          Quick update:

          - client pushed the meeting to next week b/c of their schedule (they just got back from a big PR push on the East Coast (US), and it went well ( but they are tired)

          - their PR firm had them start reaching out to various bloggers & other channels...and they are collecting influencers who also want to be affiliates (which is pretty cool!)

Bottom line - I have a few days to catch my breath & refine my thoughts and pull together a more coherent presentation (Yea!).

If you have thoughts / suggestions, please keep them coming. It's really helping me refine my thoughts and DEFINITELY saving me "cold" research time...thank you!

How appealing is their product to affliliates? I agree that going with an established network like paydotcom or shareasale would be a nice option. They would take care of a lot of the work for you, as well as expose them to an army of affiliates.

You have so much to offer this company, this is exciting stuff for you!

This does sound quite time consuming, I hope you will propose a price that is fair to you. Sometimes we undervalue our services.
