Offline Consulting: Do You Charge for Actual Consulting and Nothing Else?

How many of you charge only for actual consulting (advice, knowledge, etc) and no other services such as SEO, copywriting, web design, etc?

How is that working out for you? Are you able to help your clients get results with your consulting alone?

I prefer to receive residual payments month after month vs. only doing one-time consulting sessions.

I usually do initial consultation/assessment and then perform SEO, PPC and other services on monthly basis.

Why not? Some of the client's website really sucks and my $100/hour rate is cheap to them when I tell them what's wrong with their site.

Joseph - do you try to upsell them for ongoing maintenance, development, SEO?

I'm a big believer in continuity (looks like it's a dirty word these days)

    Of course I do.

By charging per hour rate, I give myself a chance to prove my expertise and that will give them the assurance when I offer them $5000+ SEO package.

However, some of them are just el-cheapo. Pay you only $100 and they think that they can do it by themselves using my advice.

    I do

You need to have plenty experience in what you do. Write a book, it will make a ton of difference in how people see you. They won't judge you by the way you look anymore, but what's lies inside you

I think by being a true expert in your field would make you qualify to charge anyone for hearing out your knowledge and advices.

Also, try LivePerson.Com when you're ready, they got quite some customers seeking for advice there.

Specially if you are a psychic

You can and should charge for consulting even if doing the actual work is your main business model.

As you get busier you can charge to speak with business owners and give them advice and take your consulting fee of their first project if they hire you.

      This is good posture.

It gets business owners to respect your time and put a real dollar value on your advice because they're paying for it.

But if all you're charging for is consulting then you're leaving a fortune on the table.

Most small business owners simply do not have the time and resources to do their internet marketing effectively without help even if they think they do initially.

After speaking to you they should quickly realize they can't do it by themselves.

And if you don't want to do the work yourself it's easy and economical to outsource it.

For most people the real money in this business model is helping businesses make real sales and profits and getting hired over and over again or paid ongoing fees for project after project.

      Kindest regards,
      Andrew Cavanagh

Most of my clients hire me to write their marketing and consult with them. Typically the consulting time is before the marketing piece launches and for a short duration thereafter. Some choose to pay me an ongoing royalty to continue to be available to them for consulting advise.
