Does your wife get what you do online?

by Heath Sanchez 101 replies
For those of us with a partner, does your wife/husband/partner understand what you do online?

My wife puts up with LOADS of Internet Marketing talk, always nodding, smiling and encouraging me - but I don't think she fully understands exactly what it is that I do!

I guess all she's concerned about is the profit, and in particular the portion that goes towards her 'new shoes' fund...

My partner's very supportive. Guess I can relate to the nodding part, I get the "uhaaa, that's great baby" every time I announce that I have a new product idea.

I don't have a spouse, but I can say that almost none of my friends have any idea what I do or how I make money. Most of them just think I design websites for other people. Every now and then I get a request to make a site for someone's business and then they're baffled because I tell them that's not really what I do.

Mine likes the security of a traditional paycheck twice a month, and doesn't really get the IM thing. But when I break the online income down into $$ per hour she does get that.

                Hey guys,

My girlfriend gets it so much and has listened to so much of my talk she recently started her own IM career...she's had her first site up just over a month and has made about $400 from it already.

                Pretty cool huh?

When I first started out two years ago we almost divorced because of all the time I spend online.

Now, before she leaves the house she asks how much we have in PayPal and when she's out she will call home to see if I've made anything while she has been gone..lol

Once I had my first thousand dollar day she became very supportive of what I do. She went from nagging me about staying online to telling me stay up as long as it takes.

I'm not saying the money is the only thing important to her, I'm saying she finally understands that I'm actually working and not just playing games while everyone else is asleep....lol

Although he doesn't get it, he is very supportive of it. I stopped bothering to explain what I was doing and simply began giving him my daily estimate of hours to be worked that day. From there, we spend the money and enjoy life. As long as the cash keeps coming, I don't think he will care anymore or any less what exactly it is I do. ( Although he does want to try out his own site so he is making some of the money )

My husband didn't get it and keeps asking about what this is all about. The kids don't really get it either. Two or three times I thought they were going to learn a bit - like with the ThirtyDayChallenge but they haven't asked about it this year.

They do know that mom can take them out to lunch and buy them new clothes but somehow don't equate the time in front of the computer with the rising Paypal account. I believe they still think I play - but then I think I'm playing too!

She was also brought up to work for a paycheck, I guess in a sense I was too, but I knew there is an easier way to make money, and a way to work for myself, I hated working for someone else and making them money, being demanded around like I'm worthless!

I am the wife and I'm gettin' it!

For the past 12 months Peter has been researching the IM thing while I have been exchanging my time for money (seeing clients, running courses, selling products etc).

It all made sense to me when he explained the difference between spending an hour presenting to one person and spending the same amount of time getting the message out to literally millions.

I got it straight away and am so excited that I can carry on 'doing my thing' but just to a larger audience (much, much larger).

If you have the patience and they have the interest, it is worth getting your partner involved - they may have some of the best ideas for products and niches.

      Best wishes

My wife is a real blessing. She has been supportive from the beginning, but a lot of it has to do with my track record with other business endeavors in my career(s).

I think most spouses are leary of those who are always looking at IM as a get-rich-quick scheme. If they see it as today's way of doing things, they get on board and cheer you on...

Right now, my wife is still trying to understand what I'm actually doing. But she knows it's work and very supportive about it. Besides, I stay at home (keep on writing, doing the web pages, and blogs, etc.) and sees that I'm having fun at what I do.

Bottom line with any work is that you enjoy what you do. For a marriage, or any partnership, your partner will support you only if (1) you're enjoying your work; and (2) you pay the bills on time every time (with money for shoes).

Give it time, as long as you enjoy what you're doing she'll get it.

That's what my wife says as well! Actually, for the sake of simplicity, that is also the same approach I take when I am telling people what I do...

People understand the tangible and something like website design or building websites is easier for someone to understand than to try to get into a long winded conversation about what I do.

I don't think my wife still gets everything I do though. Some of the more shady stuff (aliases and what not) confuse her and make her think I am up to no good when in actuality I am just building marketing personas...

                        I have a theory...

There is a direct relationship between the amount of money that is made online, and the amount of support offered by loved ones.

My fiance doesn't really understand Internet marketing. When I try to explain to her what I am doing her eyes usually glaze over, but she is supportive - which is cool.

I have been doing the internet marketing thing for a few years now and probably spend a couple of hours a night in front of the TV on the laptop.

My wife never really understood what I was doing and felt bad for me pouring my heart into trying to create and income from home on the side. When I received my first check from Google for just over $100 she was probably even more excited than me because it was a kind of proof that my time was being rewarded.

Last year she was telling me that I should back off a bit because with all I was doing it was only bringing in $200 or so and she could see how hard I was working.

At the beginning of February I got my first Clickbank check for over $1000 and everything changed. "You can spend all the time you want on the computer if you are going to get checks like this" she said.

Well now every two weeks like clockwork I get a check for $1000 or so from clickbank and spend nothing to get it but time. She is pretty happy with the money and it has been fully integrated into our family income so I am expected to bring it home (adds a bit of stress to those days near the nd of the middle of and end of the month).

Now I have decided not to settle in again and am working even smarter and harder. I keep telling my wife that I am going to retire from the rat race at the end of the year and we both laugh, but it is only a matter of time in my mind and heart.

My wife didn't really understand it too much, until I started doing freelance programming. She understood that, because my regular job is programming too. It took a little while to get the Google Adsense stuff and affiliate marketing, but now she's more supportive and realizing that I'm not out there scamming people out of their money.

Well my ex husband didn't get it at all and from what I hear, he's still complaining about it. Oddly he spent hours and days on end playing video games while I made a pretty good income. My children's father gets it though and I am teaching him about IM, along with one of our son's. I find if you start them out with something simple so they're learning the basics it works out pretty good. So I am teaching them both affiliate marketing in niches they both enjoy, one is music and the other is video games, easier to sell that way too.

My fiance "sort of" gets it, in the fact that she knows people buy things online to solve a problem or it's an impulse buy….much like her buying new cases for her 8gb iPod Touch and her new Zune HD player…but beyond that, she'd rather go out and get a job, though for the time being while she's on disability, she much prefers sitting on her rear-end with one of those MP3 players glued to her hand all day…which sorta blows sometimes because there are days when I know I need a little push to keep on track and she's not there for me! :-(

So, I simply digress and keep moving forward the best I can!

Sometimes the single life is better. My ex boyfriend kinda understood what I did online after I showed him, but was resentful while he had to go out and work in all sorts of freezing weather conditions, I was at home "playing" on my laptop. I got so mad and frustrated with him one day I asked if he wanted to kill all my dreams or just resentful because I worked my own hours? Needless to say we split shortly after that.

For now single is good, no one to explain to, and for the person that my be sharing my near future with me, he is an affiliate marketer as well, and we bounce ideas off each other all the time, we will see if this will go anywhere..

Wife gets it 100%. She realizes the income is exponential unlike a 9 to 5 trade hours for fixed dollars amount. And she sees the results since we have had enough extra each month to attain another part of our dreams.

On the other hand, kids do not get it at all. They can't figure out how I can make a living without "disappearing" for 8 to 12 hours a day. But they see the results just like wife so one day maybe they'll get it.

Our 8 year old son kind of understands it, but not completely. He says when people ask what his Mum and Dad do, he says "They're internet marketers" Of course most people don't understand what that is - our families are almost always baffled when we mention it to them. They're impressed with the results we generate though

Liam, it just goes to show the state of our education system when they do not teach our kids that some people work from home and in some cases, work much harder than someone going to an office each day.

What is weird is that a lot of our girl's friends families have one parent doing marketing online all day as well and they still dont get it.

They have begun to realize it though because when I tell them I am going to be "working" not to disturb me where before it was a free for all.

        - Actually funny story. The one girl was searching the internet one day on google images and saw a picture of me and some forms I sell. She said, OMG, thats u. What the? I said do u realize that one form image has paid for the van in the driveway? She was so interested how it did that. I think she is getting the idea of Internet Marketing more and more.

My girlfriend gets it too. She realizes this is an entrepreneurial venture, and as such you don't get paid a set amount of dollars for your time, aka a job. She does realize that there is tremendous leverage here since we're dealing with the internet after all, and the income can shoot up exponentially if this leverage is exploited.

LOL I had a funny incident that sums this one up nicely!

Last month I went to toilet and when I came out I was $900 richer. I showed my wife, hoping for support that my plans were working.

She said "You made $900 having a f**** cr*p!" then she got DragonsBane (my broadsword) down off the wall and demanded I do it again.

I had to hide in the toilet for half-an-hour and by the time I was brave enough to come out, I discovered she had spent it all

At first my wife didn't, but then she saw that it was working. It wasn't so much the checks that turned her around, but the regular checks. She didn't care so much about how much did you earn last month, she was more concerned with can you keep this income coming in month after month.

That must be that "security" thing they're always talking about.

Once she saw that she not only became more supportive, but started contributing ideas and now dabbles in it herself.

My husband has been supportive from the start. I don't explain all the details, I just leave a little report on the kitchen counter each evening that looks something like this:

$327 yesterday. Have a nice day, dear!

He has a general understanding of what I do. I showed him each income stream and ran a report on each, but all he cares about is that daily total. He sees the number changing frequently and does not get upset when it goes down sometimes. He knows it will go back up again.

That little report brightens up his morning as he heads off to his day job at 4am I am so lucky to be the one at home!

My goodness, you have an awesome woman there, that's a keeper!

My girlfriend is always asking me to teach her what I do, not so she can move into IM herself but just so she can understand WTF I do for a living.

All she sees is that I sit at my computer for hours a day, listening to musing in the background, and somehow out of the blue the rent, holidays and dinners out are automatically paid for.

But here's my thing: I'm never too explicit with what I do! not even with my family. I simply say stuff like "I drive traffic to offers they might be interested in". In a way, I kind of like and embrace the "misty mystery" surrounding a professional IM'er

She sees me as a spammer and a schemer even though my lists are double opt in and people know they're signing up for the newsletters and not just downloading an e book.

She hates everything about what I'm doing but claims that she doesnt mind it.

Very few people understand what I do. People understand the web and they understand you can make money but they only understand that on the big scheme of things. They think big web business like Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, HuffPost, etc. What they don't seem to realize is that just like in real life where there are small businesses and stores all over the place that make great livings and many are even wealthy, the internet is the same. Within every niche there's 1000's of more niches and each niche has an opportunity to profit. However, the more specific of a niche you get the more specialized you become and the harder it is for people to understand your trade. Plus people have a hard time conceptualizing a business that makes money when they can't see a physical store or presence of that business.
