[Debate] Are there too many domain suffixes now?

I read somewhere that there are up to 400 prefixes and suffixes now to domains, all edging out the indomitable .com

I simply ask, are there too many for people to be able to handle?

We have in England alone:

.co.uk
.gb
.org.uk
.gov.uk
.edu.uk

And many many others that I probably forgot, this is continuing for every conceivable country in the world, is there a point where the ICANN should put the brakes on its runaway insanity and leave well alone before we end up with effectively a separate suffix for every single man, woman and child on the planet as well as their pet moose?

I think that it helps with some things, like people who buy the .com address and never do anything with it except try to sell it for 500x what they paid for it, but it is getting a little over the top. I think that it's a good marketing technique though - there are many companies out there who are going to buy their name in every new domain extension they can get their hands on, so the more that ICANN can make, the more they can sell.

But think of it this way, obviously sedo and godaddy have the pick of the big names that everyone would want, with the introduction of .me they pre-registered love.me, s***w.me (and its much lesser known four letter variant) when the rest of us have to wait just so that they can hold them for a couple of years and charge exorbitant fees.

    Shouldn't this be made illegal?

If they wish to hold love.me and buy.me and such then that is fair enough, but make them pay a fee for holding them, equal to what they value it each year.

I am sick and tired of these companies supposedly marketing themselves as being registrars for the people and cherry picking the best of the best for themselves and screwing us on prices later.

This brings me back to the other point, if ICANN is simply going to bring out new TLDs every other month where does it end?

My opinion is that most people are not going to remember you URL and manually type it in. They are mostly clicking links, so it really doesn't make much difference what you have except maybe for SEO. And with that, what's true today may not be tomorrow.
