What Should I Do If My Voice Sounds Low?

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to make a product which includes audio and video files. But the problem is I think my voice sounds too low and is not too nice to hear.

Is it possible to ask another person to record the audio for me?
What did you think about your voice? Do you like it?

Sounds like a Craiglist or Backpage project in the making!

A voice over is easy to get....pretty darn cheap, it just requires that you are very specific on the script and timing.

I would suggest Craigslist... post a wanted (maybe a Gig). Then have them email you a voice sample of at least 4 sentences. You can even supply the 4 sentences.

Start smoking and drink whiskey. That always helps and works better than talking with marbles in your mouth.

Outside of using a mallet? oh wait, that's for a high pitch voice.

Seriously - using voice over talent is acceptable and a good idea. With the technology available now you can get help from almost anywhere. Many online com programs (think Skype, Webex, GotoSeminar) provide recording options.

As others have suggested you can use Craigslist or backpage to search for help. Many DJs at radio stations are looking for gigs like this too - though they may be on the higher price side. Don't forget local colleges with radio/tv/communcations programs. An ad placed on a bulletin board near classes might get some replies as well.

    Good luck,

Maybe you worry too much. Having a high or low voice does not matter really, unless the high or low is unnaturally produced.

It's actually very hard to accurately evaluate your own voice.

Make a recording and let other people hear it.

As stated above, getting someone to do a voice-over is completely acceptable.

However, I just want to note that it's completely normal to find recordings of one's own voice a bit off-putting. Same for video-recording.
If you do it often, you'll start getting used to it, but I think everyone's first reaction is "I don't sound like that, do I?"

So, just letting some people hear a sample narration from you and give you feedback would probably be the best way to objectively decide whether you need to outsource the voice-work or not.

Can't you change your voice using some audio software? Maybe speed it up so it sounds like Alvin from the Chipmunks. Everybody loves Alvin!

Voice-overs are common, no problem. Don't be so sure your voice isn't acceptable though. Most people I know like a deep voice. Think of voice-over master Don LaFontaine (sp?) who did so many movie trailers. He had a fairly deep voice and earned a fortune because of it.

At any rate, someone said it's hard to judge our own voice, and that's true. I always thought I had a pretty "average" voice, then one day after over a decade of being married my wife told me my voice was deep and smooth. I had no idea!

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.

    hi SRLee,

Yes, you sure can hire someone else to record the audio. Plenty of people do this even if they think they have a decent voice, because a pro knows how to put the right inflection in, avoid "uhs" and all that good stuff.

Some Warriors do it, such as Scott Woodside, Pete Egler and others I'm not remembering off the top of my head. You can also go to voices.com to look for voice-over artists.

    Cheers,
    Becky

I have not tried this, but one of my buddies who is great with audio and video swears by it.

He uses the free program audacity to adjust the pitch of his voice. He prefers his voice to sound slight deeper than it is.

Here's a site with a brief example of how to change pitch.

People usually don't like the sound of their voice
and are too subconscious about it...

But really; as long as you provide Great content

Without knowing you, do you really know for a fact that it's unnaturally deep?

I always thought my voice was way deeper than it really was until I started doing these Camtasia videos because until then I never really heard myself speak before.

I was also self-conscious that my voice wasn't good enough(im kind of a rough speaker where it sounds like im uneducated), but I said to hell with it and just made the videos.

It turns out that a lot of people like my style and even find my videos entertaining.

I think you should just try and see what happens.

Why not do a sample sentence reading and we can rate it for you?

having a low voice can be good for marketing. It's actually been proven that people are more influenced by lower/deeper voices than any other. It's something about it commanding authority on a subconscious level.

At the end of the day unless it's hard to understand you - I say do the audio yourself.

There are a lot of audio software out there than can alter your voice such as tone, pitch, intonation. You can even record and use Microsoft's Narrator.

          Hello,

I agree with alot of the post in this tread. I will tell you I thought the same about my voice. What I ended up doing was ercording myself and rehearsing what I was going to record over and over. Once I had down what I was going to say, I came out smooth and with out any ums. At that time it did not matter what my voice sounded like the audio was still clean because I was clean.

Use a helium balloon? hee hee

Seriously though, I actually think an out of the ordinary voice is more interesting & authentic for voice overs.

If you really don't like your voice, you can hire professional voiceover artists, but they are very expensive. Or maybe you could hire someone from on the warrior forum?
