Too Many Keyword Matches?

I am looking at a key word phrase that has about 3million exact phrase matches (over 150million broad phrase matches). Google tells me there are 300,000 searches for the keyword phrase a month.

When you google the keyword phrase, you get two or three high PR sites, like Wikipedia, eHow, etc., then a bunch of low PR sites, including someone's personal blog, a review for a restaurant with the keywords in its name, etc. Essentially, there does not appear to be very organized competition for the phrase.

My question is, will I be able to compete against the millions of pages that appear to be buried in other sites with a site that will be specifically targeted to the keyword, or is trying to outrank 3million exact phrase match pages a fool's errand?

Thanks in advance for your insight!

You can compete with anything if you are willing to put the time and effort into it. It may take a long time, but almost anything is beatable.

Thanks, but do you think a disorganized google first page is penetrable in say six months?

Without knowing all of the details of the niche you are attacking, but knowing from my own personal experience, it is definitely possible to rank for highly competitve niches.

You need to make sure you regularly working to stay there though.

One thing to consider though with your keyword.

You said that Wikipedia and eHow take the top sites, but there are a lot of searches. Is this a keyword search dominated by info seekers that aren't necessarily prepared to pay for anything?

      Cheers,

Anything is possible as long as you allot enough time and effort to do SEO. So I say, yes, you could penetrate the stiff competition. Outrank 'em all!

When you are looking to check out your competition, you need to look at the first page of Google or whatever search engine that you are targeting and see what is ranking. Use SeoQuake for Firefox to see the seo info for the listed sites and also see if the sites are big authority sites or Web 2.0 sites.

Its good if you see many Web 2.0 sites and then look at the backlinks on the particular page that is listed and see if you can beat that.
If there are mostly authority sites or large sites with high PR and backlinks, then maybe you should pass on the keyword.
