Do Pop Up Exit Pages Help or Hurt Conversions?

I'm thinking about adding a pop up exit script to my product site to offer coupons, etc to try to get people to change their mind and buy.

If you use pop up exit scripts, do they work.

I use one, and it occasionally helps me grab a sale from someone who would have otherwise left my site and never returned. Frankly I don't see any harm in them at all. Only benefits. The conversion rate is quite low, but it's better than nothing.

I think if somebody is trying to click out of your site, they're going to click out regardless. I think the pop up just makes them angrier.
BTW, I only speak from personal experiences so don't hold me to it.
I think what you might try if you're going to make a go at the exit pop up is possibly having your face on your header and also having it in the exit pop up instead of a picture of some random lady wearing a headset.

It really depends on what your offering on that exit popup.

The ones i have found work really well are for a discount or an 'extra' bonus (the extra bonus was given already to everyone but just simply not wrote down on the intial sales page). This then gives the user/visitor more of a reason to signup and often converts them into a sale.

Heck its lost traffic if not so why not.

It really depends upon who you ask .. Myself personally.. I have no popups because they are freaking annoying and if I am annoyed so is my visitors.

Site has a popup, I leave.... I do not care what it is offering.. Course I do not signup for NO mail list either so I might not be a good example..lol

I find it depends on how you're doing it.

I've recently experienced pretty good results by having an exit popup which links to a quiz on a hot sub topic of the main page, and I'm actually getting a lot of optins that way and also able to follow up with visitors to hopefully convince them the second time around to purchase.

      James,

I know how you feel. Like you, I hate pop ups.

      But still, I use them.

Because in certain niches...and if used in the right way,
it really do help increase opt ins. As well as "saving"
visitors who are about to leave.

      Testing really is key here!

No time for how I or others feel.

If the visitors like it, it stays. If they don't, it goes.

I found that pop ups generally work better
in non-IM niches as the audience there
      aren't too exposed to this.

I tried them in niches such as skin care, hynosis
and personal development. And pop up has
      worked well in all.

Also, I found that non-invasive pop ups
work better (pop up only appears when
they click the "x" button) as compared to
pop ups that just appear out of nowhere
when visitors are still in the midst of reading.

But then again, I've gotten plenty of
sign ups on pop ups that gradually appear
and slide down (with Aweber) to the center.

In this case, how long the form takes to
appear plays a part. It's an element to test
      out too.

All in all, it boils down to testing.

The results may just surprise you. =)

      Warmly,
      Jag

its pretty easy to spot the cheesy sites that have those exit popups, usually have pix of huge mansions / exotic sports cars / over tanned people plastered all over.

Just leaving my opinion.. I don't like them. I haven't met to many people that do like them. I personally couldn't tell you if they work or not though. Best of luck to you

      They work, simple as that.

Do they annoy visitors - yes , they do.

Do they grab additional leads or sales from people who were going to leave your site - yes they do if implemented correctly.

Can you add to your bottom line.

It depends what sort of person you are.

Personally, I'm annoyed by the people who use those pop up exit pages, but then again I'm a hypocrite because they have grabbed my attention at the last minute and have converted me into a buyer.

Generally, they're seen as pretty annoying but you never know. I guess it also depends on the quality of your content and the niche you're in. IM is a niche with a lot of this sort of stuff, so we'd know a scam if we see one. It might increase conversions and be OK with people in other niches if you present it in a non-confronting way.

    Hope that helps.

    Cheers,

    -Johnson.
