Backing up windows mail...

I just bought a new computer with windows 7 and need to move my emails over.

Backing up windows mail on vista seems to be a tad more complicated than when saving outlook express which was what I used on my XP computer a couple of years ago.

Does anyone have an idiot proof way of moving them that even I can understand I would be grateful, I want to move them all to my new computer as they are now. (If that makes sense)

Cheers
Kim

What are you using for your email client and what kind of email account do you have? Are you using Outlook? ....if so, do you know how the email account is set up? (POP3, IMAP?)

Let me know and we can go from there. If you're using POP or IMAP chances are the emails are still on the server. The only thing that you might want to pull over is your N2K file, which saves all your email addresses and makes it possible to do that neat little "autofill" thing in the "To" space.

Worst comes to worst, you can create a personal folder (.pst file), move the emails into the personal folders, copy the pst to the new computer and connect Outlook to the pst on the new computer....sorry, I may be getting ahead of myself!

If you're using Outlook you can

      Hi Bretski thanks for responding

I'm just using Windows mail which comes with Vista. I assumed you could save your emails the same way you could those in Outlook express, but apparently not

I want to save them so I can reimport them into the windows mail on my new computer I did that a couple of years ago when moving from XP to Vista and there wasn't a problem.

      Thanks
      Kim

Aaaahhhh! Ok! Microsoft has a step by step article on this. I'm not very well versed in Vista or 7 but it looks pretty straightforward. Very similar to exporting emails from Outlook Express.

How to export e-mail messages from Windows Mail & Outlook Express into Outlook.

Just remember where you export them to, such as your desktop or a thumb drive (memory stick).

Importing should be just the opposite of exporting.

Let me know if the article makes sense to you...

Its pretty simple. I'll try to lay it out in a "idiot proof way" like you want it

    1) Go to Tools > Accounts and select your account. Click on export and save the account settings file.

    2) Go to File > Export > Messages... then select "windows mail". You will be asked for a folder to store your messages. Save them in a new folder so that its easy to locate later.

    3) Go to File > Export > Contacts .. then select "windows mail" . You will be asked for a folder to store your contacts. make sure you have a new empty folder ready)or create one there and then) and click next and it will store your contacts.

Collect all three folders (account settings, Messages and Contacts) and load em up on your new computer.
Then.. Do the same as above.. except that you should select IMPORT at all the steps rather than export.

PM me if you need more help. cheers
