How do I make my website secure to protect my customers and I from hackers and viruses?

Hello all,

I have been looking at the Trust Guard seal which looks great, but not something I can afford yet.

Which set me thinking about website security.

What steps should I take to make my website secure from viruses & hackers?

I would hate for any customers visiting my site to get infected.

And of course for me - to keep my site clean & untampered with.

I have looked around and can't find any information on how to do this. A set of step by step instructions would be so useful, I wonder if someone has made a product about this ...?

There are products on how to make your computer secure, but not your website.

My site is basic html - not wordpress.

Are there any technical/security experts who can advise?

thank you!

  • Well you can start by installing a SSL certificate on your domain.
If you have a simple affiliate site or blog then you really don't need it.
High security is mostly only important on ecommerce stores imho.
  • You should not allow the Others to copy you code
  • Hi there,

Yes, the site will use ejunkie and paypal - so they take care of the security of taking payments.

I can do protection to make sure the code can't be copied.

... but i was thinking more of whether the site itself can get infected or get malicious stuff on it, that will harm people's computers when they visit?

the kind of stuff that Trust Guard scans for?
  • It happened to me. Some hacker injected malicious code into one of my sites and it got flagged by Google.

It's mostly your HOST's job to protect you from that, but many times third party applications like Joomla and other allows hackers with loopholes.

Your best bet would be to protect your source code. There are several software/scripts on the market that can do it. Just Google around.

    • changing the chmod of your directories and files will help, something to 755 or 644

777 will not be very good security.
