Hello-learning HTML vs. Templates??

I've just joined and am pretty much a newcomer to this IM world..so firstly,"Hello all"

so,first steps first..I'm looking into creating a website, and not knowing HTML (yet) was wondering if anyone out there can advise whether or not templates like WORDPRESS etc are the way to go initially..they seem pretty good, but is there a limit to how much one can customize the look +content?

Would it be more beneficial perhaps to learn from scratch and get a grasp of basic HTML.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated..

David

Hi David welcome to the forum!

I think using wordpress to start out is a great idea there is a ton you can do with it etc
as for customizing the look you can do that as well but there are soo many themes available you may not need to.

    Have a great day!

    Welcome to this forum!

I would also recommend wordpress when you are starting off. It is highly customizable and the plugins that come with it are simply amazing and add so much more functionality to your site. It is an easy option for quick sales pages as well. The possibilities are endless. Go for wordpress. There is simply nothing better IMO.

Even if you are using Wordpress, a basic knowledge of html, css, and php will save you a lot of time and frustration when it comes to customizing the design or getting posts to look just the way you want. I have yet to find a WP theme that works properly without some tweaking.

HTML is not all that hard. If you can post on a forum, you can learn HTML in a ...flash... no pun intended. Lol.
These two resources for learning it are the best I know of:
    Webmonkey: the Web Developers Resource
    HTML Tutorial
and a good CSS forum when you run into problems you need a quick answer to:
    Killersites.com Web Design Forums

With that said, WP is an OK CMS, but does require constant updating and security hole plugging. Though there are no CMSs that are truly set and forget, if they are targeted by a cracker. Neither are HTML sites for that matter, I like WP and use it a lot.

    Underdog,

Until you make like 50 worthwhile posts, or pay to join the war room, all messages with you will be public, through the warrior forum.

Wordpress IS a nice simple way to start and YES, it DOES have definite limits, ANY template run within a program, besides the http(s) server of course, WILL have limits.

Templates MAY have non HTML code, and require some code to be a certain way, etc... but most DO allow some HTML. It is a good idea to learn HTML anyway. And HTML isn't REALLY a language. In a way, it is ALSO a templating language for the HTTP(s) server. Some people call THAT an HTML server. It could be apache, or IIS, or any of several others, but apache and IIS probably own about 90% of the market in some way/shape/form.

Wordpress is fine to start with, but you can do a lot more if you learn the basic of HTML and CSS. It isn't hard. I offer quite a few tutorials (free) on my BoogieJack.com website. Check the top link in my sig file to see how easy it is.

Just when you think you've got it all figured out, someone changes the rules.
