Ebook creation and piracy?

just enquiring about the whole ebook creation topic-is there any kind of encrypted method to stop a purchaser from emailing it around for free (once they have downloaded it) or even rebranding it.

    Hi underdog7,

Basically any method you come up with can be subverted. Also, you don't want to make it too difficult for paying customers to access it each time.

    Here is my advice:

    1. Spend the majority of time on getting the results you want, not on the losses you want to prevent.

    2. It may not happen to you at all, but it may. In my experience I've found it's not that big of a problem, though it does happen.

    3. Most of the people who download it for free wouldn't have bought it anyway, so the number of actual sales lost is relatively low. Also, because they get it for free, they are less likely to actually use the information inside.

    4. Beat them at their own game, sort of. In other words, let it be sent around for free - or assume it will be. Monetize it by including links to other products or programs that will make you extra money.

    All the best,
    Michael

Excellent info, pay particular attention to #4. Many people give ebooks away with links that bring them large amounts of traffic.

I've been using Ebook Pro to distribute my ebooks and have never had any problems. It produces an exe file and most email clients won't even let you email exe files. Each ebook also has it's own unique username and password which I can deactivate if a client asks for a refund. I think it's the best ebook compiler out there. Sure, there are always ways around everything but ebook pro definitely makes it difficult for even the most crafty of thieves.

Also, I don't really agree that those who download your product for free would not have bought it anyway. I'm thinking there are plenty of people who will:

    1) See your website, like your product, then want to buy it.
    2) Will go to torrent sites to see if they can download it for free.
    3) Won't see it for free anywhere so will go ahead and just buy it.

I'm a firm believer in protecting your products, especially ebooks. Make it as difficult as possible to acquire them for free.
