What you're thinking of doing is a very specialized project. From your description, you're talking about a site like eBay, except maybe without the option of bidding. Obviously if you want to set up such an online store, you need to find people who would be interested to buy and/or sell their own items at your store.

So the question is what type of items should you focus on. EBay sells all kinds of things (and allows people to put their things up for sale there) but it would not be advisable to do what they do especially if you're just starting out. It would be better to focus on one type of product that you want people to buy or sell at your site.

To determine what type of product you'd like your site to focus on, so to Google's search-based keyword tool (google.com/sktool). In the search field, type in some modifiers such as 'buy', 'purchase' or 'order'. These are the words people would use when they want to search for something to buy. The sktool will churn out a whole list of search terms containing the modifier words along with other data. From there, choose the item you'd feel would be a good niche market to develop your site around.

Once you've decided on your niche, then choose a domain name that contains the main keyword of your niche (keyword rich).

After that, start developing the program for your website. As a designer, you would know how to do that

When your site is live, then you come to the all-important aspect of traffic generation. Now that's a whole different matter. Cross the bridge when you get to it.
