Offering a paid only business model, meaning the authors pay to join. Offering a 100% ad free website that offers a great deal more that other article directories do not offer.

Plain and simple that is the answer to your question. There is a great deal more details that go into this though ...

I would mention the importance of PR. If I see an article directory with low PR, I am unlikely to use it (especially if I have to pay).

I would recommend building PR before moving to a paid model.

Then you are seriously losing money ...PR means nothing at all. People that beleive in those myths are the ones that leave money on the table while others are taking massive advantage...

A PR 0 site could be getting 1,000 uniques a day, while a PR 5 could be getting 50 a day.

I agree with James, PR really means nothing. I see sites with low PR all the time outranking high PR sites. You can't base your decision solely on PR.

To compete with the many already established article directories, you need to be different. Find a position in the market that makes you different and at the same time adds value.

Offer something/feature that other directories done offer

You have to build some reputation and get ranked well in SE before attracting good writers....you may have to deal with what you get at first, but slowly phase them out as you grow...and introduce new guidelines to only bring in top quality articles.

Which is the best "article directory script" available if one wants to start his own article directory.
    1. Free / GPL
    2. Paid

Are there any good solutions with un-encrypted code?

Article Dashboard, Article Friendly, YourArticlesDirectory.com .. what are others?

    Thanks

User your own if you can write one, use a content management(would require alot of upgrades and coding to get it right) or get someone to write one for you.

You want to have flexibility and again, not look like other directories. be unique

    Thanks ArticleDirectory,

But I am not a full blown programmer, neither have the budget to employ someone to program it for me. In that case what are the options that are currently available out there to start an Article Directory of own.

Take this for what it is worth .... Do not listen to those so-called experts that claim all you need to do is slap up a directory script and boom you are in business and you can slap adsense all over and make a million dollars...

Sorry may have worked years ago but no longer, many of these adsense farms have been phased out and new ones that have started struggle big time. Times are changing and with that change must come adaption, which means authors are looking for "what's in it for me".. The trade between post your article for free and I toss adsense on them is no longer a workable solution unless you have an already established article directory.

Hundreds of article directories close down every year because they fall for this false dream of making money with adsense. Many good authors are pushing away from the auto submit to 1,000 article directories because the fact is 900 of them will be nothing but adsense farms and owned by people that do not know how to market an article directory.

You want to survive you are going to have o get creative and offer authors something of value. Offer features and tools no other article directory offers and the best model is paid model. Forget the auto submitters and the junky articles that many (not all) but many submit using these article submitters. The junk will create more work for you and trash your article directory.

This is why a paid model that requires authors to pay a monthly fee will always be better. You get more qualified authors and higher quality content and no worries about auto submitted articles.

Technology is increasing every single day and you must have an article directory that is going to keep up with that technology. This means you must be able to integrate with social media and web 2.0 sites, just adding bookmark buttons on an article is not going to cut it. You must make it easy to use and at the same time offer value to the authors.

You can pick one of those free scripts that are not secured and offer nothing to the authors but trust me you are going to have one heck of a time getting it to make you an income. Besides that you better be prepared for very long days and a great deal of work.
