Am I even close to understanding this...?

Many of YOU already know that my talent is not in internet marketing, but thanks to YOUand YOUR patients I am learning a great deal.

I have a large amount of content that will go under each subject and was wondering if I should get a domain for each or not, this question has been address before, but I am not sure if in this manner: "www.widget/red, www.widget/blue" and so forth, with each subject having complete and separate categories and sub-categories with as I stated a lot of content, some of which is interactive.

Do I/ Should I/ Can I get separate domains for each? Confused.

Thank YOU, in advance for YOUR guidance.

If the topics are related, I would probably put them on the same domain. It's hard to say for certain without more specifics, though...

Well, what the topics are, who your target readers are, what your expansion plans for the site are, etc.

Why would you need to know any of that? All you need to know is, can the subjects relate to each other. If yes put them on the same domain... If one is about fishing and one about football, 2 domains are better.

Exactly. I gave general advice (if they are related put them on the same domain). To give specific advice, I'd need to know the specifics. It's not a big deal, just thought I'd offer to give more specific advice if wanted.

Another solution "in between" - to use subdomains like red.widget.com; blue.widget.com etc.
It cuts the cost of buying and hosting domains and the search engines, usually, treat the subdomains as separate websites.

So I go to a hosting company and purchase just one domain name and create subs underneath it?

Lets say I am creating a site for the human race (nothing as grand I promise), but we are all different, yet the same, so would I get one domain that would read Spanish.American.com, Indian.American.com ....

Put it in simple terms You don't need to use sub domains the .com/... is fine. Does your 2 subjects relate to each other?

EG... Metal working and Machine safety.

No they don't relate. They would be categorized the same, but the content is vastly different.

Well you could do two things... You could brand a website and have different sections or this is what I would do, if they are 2 separate niches then I would grab myself 2 domains.

It you have tons of content just give us the subject matters. No one is going to be able duplicate your content and therefore steal your ideas if that is your concern. This way we can tell you if it can be one site or should be on separate sites.

It really depends. I might go with subdomains if it's obvious the topics are related, and I wanted to encourage people visiting one subdomain to check out the others. Let's say the niche is cats. Maybe a subdomain for cat toys, a subdomain for litter boxes, a subdomain for cat health topics, etc.

Unless I were trying to create a general "pet" site, I'd avoid having subdomains about cats, dogs, and hamsters attached to the same domain. But that's just my personal preference, since I prefer to group things according to relevance.

Personally I would start off with just a folder arrangement, like domain.com/subject1.html or a sub domain, subject1.domain.com That would save the cost of one domain registration, which isn't much of course. If it turns out that there is enough money in the topics and you do want to move to a separate domain later on you can and just put in a redirect to the new domain.

One of the longer lessons for me to learn is that quality content doesn't mean money. I have a trashy little site that pulls in a lot more than a couple that impressed me, and those so far have not managed to pay for their domain registration.

Just thought I'd mention that since it sounds like you might possibly be a bit of an idealist (I am too) and that can be a handicap. Doesn't mean that you have to give it up, just keep it tucked away out of sight in the marketplace.

    best wishes, lloyd
