What would happen if I used my IM knowledge unselfishly?

Warriors, I just read the thread regarding hydra going belly up and a thought came to me. The thought came to me out of guilt due to the fact that 2 years ago I banked quite a few thousand dollars using their cpa offers and some black hat tactics. They soon caught on to my devious ways and suspended my account, I am now aware of my part in the undoing of what I considered a great company.

I have since changed my ways and repented of all my spams

So now the point of the thread, what would happen if I used my IM knowledge unselfishly?

I know how to get more high pr ranking backlinks than I know what to do with, but I'm completely anti-spam and most of my methods appear on the surface spammy.
What I mean by spammy is 'cluttering the web with duplicate or irrelevant content for the sake of traffic'. But what if I used those techniques to introduce a 'new' offline business to the web without starting a trendy 'Internet Marketing Company'?

Case in point:

I just had a meeting with my off-line boss who is a roofing contractor. He asked me yesterday if I knew how to file for un-employment and I said no and I dont wanna learn. I'm against un-employment because I've gained way too much knowledge from this forum to be dependent on a broken system

To quickly shift the convo I told him I checked out the company website and recommended that it needs over hauling.

Up to that point my boss had no clue I had web skills, I found the job on CL 3 months ago and hes just yelled at me since

So that was yesterday morning, since then I have developed a full scale local online marketing plan.

The plan is designed to:
-bring his html 1999 site up to 2.0 status
- get his site listed on the front page of google
-incorporate an email building survey for past current and future customers
-teach him how to use his new facebook thingy
-become his trusted and faithful marketing adviser opposed to shingle throwing grunt :p

I guess the thread I just read and assumed inspired a new idea just re-affirmed what I'm already doing but brought back memory's of how I helped trash the web

I've done some pretty random profitable things online that served only my own selfish interests. I excluded everybody else and in doing so I became a hermit for like 3 months at one point which was very lonely.

So, what do you think about that thought, "What would happen if I used my IM knowledge unselfishly?"

I had a similar change of attitude and now I think of it as paying a little attention to the heart instead of the ego. Don't think it affects the amount of money you make, that will just depend on the time and attention you put into that, but it started such an nice direction that has really paid off in the way I feel.

A big part of the story here: honesty. (If anyone is bored, lonely, and has absolutely nothing better to do.)

I did read a few comments years ago that anyone who ever made a buck dishonestly would have made 2 honestly and that rings true to me although I can't think of any examples. Also I realize you are not quite talking about dishonesty, just a shade of gray.

    best wishes, lloyd

Jeremy and Lloyd, I admire you both for turning over a new leaf. Changing one's character can be a real challenge!

Search for "offline marketing" and you'll find lots of threads about how to take online marketing techniques to local businesses. With the kind of new attitudes you have I think a lot of people could really appreciate your services, because they'll be able to tell that you care.

Sometimes, especially in IM, it is tempting to use 'less than favourable' techniques - simply out of pure frustration (especially when you're just getting started).

I think it's important to recognise 'your change' as a positive step in the right direction so instead of adding to the stereotype of Internet Marketing - you are creating a new breed of ETHICAL INTERNET MARKETERS?!?!?!?!

Nice one, good luck in the future!!

    Congrats to you Jeremy,

It sure can be tempting to go to the dark side, but it isn't a way to build a long term business. If you really want something you can count on month after month you've got to have a solid white hat foundation.

It sounds like you are really helping your employer, I bet this will open additional doors for you
