If You Had To Start From The Bottom..

If you had to start your business all over again...(for those of you who have built a successful business) What would you do first? Or what would you focus on to re-build it??

For me its all about the idea. Before I start anything (and I have several times successfully) I fully vet my idea out. Lots of research before acting. For me its all about detail and a game plan.

Worry about providing quality content and building a loyal visitor/subscriber base first, and worry about monetizing much later.

Made a more detailed plan and started outsourcing sooner. Nothing is more valuable than time, and it took me a long time to learn that

Sign up to 20+ affiliate/CP networks, Bluefart some CPA/lead gen offers to get some quick cash together, hire staff member, repeat till $10,000 (wouldn't take long), buy WH traffic, more staff, invest in WH SEO sites, get to $30,000 lump sum, more staff, test own CPA offer with affiliate friends and email dumps, find a winner, release own CPA offer across the networks, more sites, more offers, then prob look into infomercials.

    Dirty but honest!

They say hindsight is 20/20, but I would have liked to have a clearer vision for the results I wanted other than "making money".

I would also liked to have thought more about vertical integration of products and even niches.

    Now I'm doing that.

I'm still at a crossroads about whether I want to do vertical integration of products or different niches altogether, but leaning towards the latter.

    Great question! I would have:

    1. Started building a list from day ONE (or at least shortly after)

    2. Stayed focused on ONE idea at a time. (If I stayed focused on the first idea I had when I started in IM, I would probably be much more well off right now!)

    3. Dedicated a lot of time to writing (or outsourcing) articles and submitting them to the major directories

    4. Kept more detailed and accurate records/reports of sales, conversions, etc.

    To name but a few!

    Best,
    Shane

This was the hardest for me - sometimes still is. But once I latch onto an idea and stay with it, it usually works out really well.

Problem is that 95% of people struggle, and so they automatically move on to the next idea thinking their idea was bad. Sometimes the idea is the problem, but many times it is not.

The first thing I would do, and did, is make a plan.

        Do what you know
        Leverage
        Create A Product
        Sell
        List
        Leverage

I start new lines of product all the time. It's all the same process:

    - keyword research
    - buying a domain and building a WP blog on it
    - integrating lead capture form
    - creating a product and putting it on sale on that blog

    Rinse and repeat

Doesn't have to be any trickier than that It's not rocket science, but it's still hard work finding the right niche to start with

It seriously doesn't have to be trickier than that.

Honestly, I'd read Crush It! by Gary Vaynerchuk. If anyone's too lazy to do that, just jump to p.135 where he lists out every step to take to build your brand and business. He covers a lot of important things, like hustle and transparency.

      Good stuff, that.

No, none of the 'tactics'. Just the fundamentals. There's going to be a new Keyword tool out tomorrow, so you might as well just use TrafficTravis (whatever that thing is) or GKT.

But building relationships and the fundamentals of business.. Those aren't tactics.

I think all of us start over all the time. I mean every new project is like you start over. Of course you always have your knowledge and your contacts but you will still start from scratch with a new project, new domain and a new site. What always seem to work for me is hard work, hard work and more hard work.

Focus. I was all over the place at first. Still hard to put the blinders on sometimes. But it's absolutely crucial to success.

      I would start building a list. I would work 3 or 4
months getting these guys to know, like and trust me

After and only after having success with subscribers
opening and reading my emails and sending comments
back to me would start sending offers that I would

      suggest would help their business.

I know I am just starting out but back when the internet was very much new I had my fair share of ideas and let my "friends" talk me out of them, like setting up vampireforum.com

I would've been sitting on some very valuable real estate now, especially with the current re-emergence after the Buffy years lol

If I had anything to share I would say if you find a great name for literally pennies then go for it, worry about how to recoup your $10 later.

I took my own advice and went with camcordermini.com for just $9 (!!) and hopefully after I can get some development done I will be able to sell for a nice profit

First thing I would do is to TEST if my product and offer sells. Once money rolls in, then I start getting serious about it.

All of you guys would be very hungry for 4 months or so. You all focus on building a product, then rapport with a list.

How about selling some else product and snatching those leads for your own list? You should make a list WHILST selling, not waiting to sell.
