Offliners: A lesson in marketing

Offliners,

There is this song called "Pants on the Ground" that was performed by 62 year old Larry Platt on American Idol.

The song is sweeping across the country and the world so much so that Larry is being interviewed on national tv talk shows.

On youtube, the video has receive over 2.5 million views since January 13, 2010.

(If you have not heard it, go check it out because it is funny. Go to listen to it.)

If he was one of my clients, we would have purchased the domain name: pantsontheground.com where we would offer his song as a mp3 download for .99

We would easily sell 1 million if not more copies of the song within the first week, but more importantly, we would build a 1 million person list of buyers that we could sale additional songs, ring tones etc to.

Here's another ideal. What about setting up a membership site that charged $1 per month and what the members would receive is 1 or 2 of Larry's new song every month.

So let's see. 1 million members times 1 dollars equals 1 million dollars per month. Sweet.

Now I have two questions that I would like to ask you Offline Warriors:

1) If Larry was your client, what advice would you offer him in order to take advantage of the 15 minutes of fame that he received?

2) How would you structure how you got paid? Percentage of the sales, money upfront, fixed fee etc.

Expect Abundance,

Michael

It's a nice idea but you wouldn't be able to do any
of that. All rights are the property of the producers
of American Idol... Fremantle Media, I believe.

T-Shirts... buttons... bumper stickers, maybe... but the
audio and video of that performance belong to them.

It might be possible to record another version and sell
it but by the time you do that the buzz has come and gone.

Agreed. However, take it from someone who just got done coordinating a deal with a youtube star(not quite the numbers, but over 135K avid subscribers and fans, plus sold out shows from LA to Chicago) there is ways to make money in merchandising.

We are set up to make money right off the top because we produce ALL merchandise, from cd's to apparel and make money on the printing/replication. Then we also make money off of doing order fulfillment and managing the shopping cart. PLUS, we make a % of every sale. So we get paid 3 times the way our deal is structured.

So although the above case might not be plausable directly, there are circumstances and some talent out there you could apply your exact ideas and make good $$. It's a lot of work though. Our first deal took almost 9 months to get signed.

      Tsnyder,

Are you saying that the creator of the song, Larry Platt could not sell his song. It is the property of American Idol. I understand the video is the property of American Idol. But it would really be awful if American Idol owned the song itself.

Well let's just say that what you say is true for the sake of this discussion.

If Mr. Platt came to you and you guys knew that Larry Platt would debut on American Idol on a certain date, what would you do to capitalize on his 15 minutes of fame.

The point of this exercise is to get everyone thinking about using their marketing/internet marketing skills in order to make money.

Just exercising that muscle will make it stronger and more profitable.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

Keep the viral buzz going by having users submit their own "pants on the ground" dances / videos to create an office Macarena-style dance to it. (see Crank Dat by Soulja Boy for an example)

FaceBook Fan Page / Myspace Group

But ya definitely a big push on merchandise and building a list to market to for other purposes of course!

      Dexx,

Pretty creative. How would you position yourself so that you make money?

Would you charge a fixed fee upfront or make your money as a result of taking a percentage of the sales etc.

Dexx, will you own the list or would you give it to Larry?

Just a few thought provoking questions.
