Hey warriors,

Starting off with video and I did a screen capture as learn how to do a talking head. The problem is, the volume is so low and yet I was shouting at the top of my voice and my audio settings were at maximum. Any ideas on what to do are welcome:

What software are you using to edit this video/audio together? Compressing the audio would help. Most video editors will include some audio editing functions, and compression should be among your tools.

If not, try exporting just the audio portion of the video, then edit it with a free program like Audacity. Compress the audio until it is loud enough for you, then match it back up to your video.

    Good luck!

From the sounds of the end product, you either did not use a (head-set) microphone OR your (head-set) microphone was not the default audio input for your recording software. As a result, your computer mic picked up your audio when recording and you may have been too far away from it.

Another suggestion - you might want to get a USB mic if you plan to do more video/audio work. You can get a relatively cheap one, like this one: Buy Nady USB-24M USB Microphone | Dynamic Microphones | USB Microphones | Musician's Friend

It will help you capture a better audio signal at the start, which will give you a better end product.

Thank you for the quick response.

@ reubenrock: I am using camtasia to edit my video. I tried to enhance the volume with their settings, and it improved a little because it was much lower than this.

@ Marty S: I used my little microphone and I was literally speaking into it. I guess I need a better microphone?

It seems I need to get a head set/microphone. Now, which option is the best without breaking a bank. I intend to to a few talking head videos and mostly screen capture videos for my site and for team training purposes. One person suggested the "Snowball Microphone" which seems to cost a little fortune, now the Nady USB...., I wonder how I will hold it esp if i start capturing myself: any other options?!

    Thanks

If you feel the need to have to enhance the audio in Camtasia or other, chances are the recording hardware and software were not set properly while recording.

Even for a "little" mic this sounded like another issue. I really don't think that mic was picking ou up at all, as there way way too much "distance" in your voice.

Anyway, a high end logitech headset is a good bet for under $80. I've had several over the years.

ADD: Just saw you mentioned snowball, which I also have, but I use that for my blogTV broadcasts so I dont have any head gear on for my live shows. I would still reccmnd a head set for quality and consistency so your voice is not traveling, and you are not stuck in one spot doing audio.

Thanks marty S, I will try again and adjust my microphone and see what happens. I am told that if I adjust the volume settings within camtasia, the video might be much louder. Will try again as I see how a heat set fits in my budget:-)

    Jan roos,

I took the clip back to camtasia, increased the volume and I think it is louder now, though it is a bit distorted. With practice, I guess I can produce a better video.

    Thanks all for your help.

You can do the screen capture in Camtasia and record your voice in audio processing software like Adobe Audition or Sound Booth to avoid Noise in the audio.
