Forced or Optional Continuity when selling products?

Ok, here is a dilemma I am having a hard time deciding.

Should I forced my customers into a continuity when they order an ebook of mine, or give them the option of ordering the ebook without the continuity?

I know when you are giving away free products, forced continuity is recommended, but what if you were selling an ebook?

Ideally, I want them to take up on the continuity, but does it affect conversion when there is a forced continuity?

Thanks for any advice.

Forced Continuity will lower your conversions, but the ROI could be greater over time as people stay in your continuity program. With optional continuity your conversions will go up but the number of people who enter your continuity will go down (obviously).

It's really something you would have to test but I would personally leave it optional. There will be less customer complaints because with forced you'll always get, "Why in the heck did you bill me $XX?" complaints no matter how obvious you make it on your sales letter.

My understanding of the new guidelines put out by Visa and MC that forced is no longer going to be acceptable. You need to have an unchecked box for them to check and it needs to be close to the checkout button.

You can have a warning pop-up if they do not check it explaining that they will be missing out on your great deal but if you use forced any longer you will probably have problems with your payment processor.
