My first article went live yesterday with Ezine and appeared on page 3 with Google when I checked this morning. I then added about 8 backlinks and now it's totally gone.

Is that any reason to panic?

First I'll assume you mean missing from Google, not Ezine.

Be patient and watch for a couple more days. It is likely to pop back in. This commonly happens on new content and websites, when it is going through the Google evaluation process.

Yes, missing from Google, it's still up on Ezine.

Thank you for the reply that's a a relief.

You probably build backlinks to the article to fast, chill out on building backlinks for a bit.

Well, I spent about 2 hours putting up about 8 backlinks. Is there a timeframe I should have stuck to?

A new article always goes through what is known as the 'google dance'. It appears on the first few pages of results for your main keyword for a day or two, then seems to disappear completely. After a few more days it should reappear lower down than when it was new, and settle there. I would probably wait till it reappears in a settled position before backlinking.

Sorry but that is awful advice. I hear a lot of people say that 'too fast' is a myth, but even if it isn't 8 links to an Ezine article in 2 hours is hardly going to raise any red flags at Google HQ.

Betty - take it from another Welshie (and Hwntw, just found out what that is and wanted to show it off!), 8 backlinks is nothing - you should get back on to building more ASAP if you want to rank. If you are doing it by hand it is very unlikely Google will notice anything - there is no way you could do enough.

The Google dance is usual after a new post or article. i have a very established blog in one niche (rugby, as any good Welsh man should) but even with that after I have posted the first day or two may well see it bounce around for a little bit before settling into the right position. With the amount of places my articles on my blog seem to turn up I will regularly get far more than 8 within minutes of posting and it never does me any harm (not that I have posted much, just noticed I slipped off the front page for my target keyword - damn, start to get blogging on that again).

Like everybody else has said, it's just the nature of the beast. But the funny thing is that sometimes the article sticks without even building any backlinks. I personally have an article that is ranked #3 for a keyword that gets a lot of searches. It has stayed that way for over 6 months without a single backlink to the article.

Backlinking definitely helps. But sometimes it's just pure luck which article Google decides to bless. Article marketing is a volume-based business model. The more articles you write, the wider your net is, and the better the chance that your article hits the top ten in Google and stays there.

Hey Betty, have you looked into where those backlinks are going or even Googled those backlinks to see what Google says about them?

I've tried it but I can't seem to find a free decent tool.

Thanks guys for all the help. I've been away for the weekend so I'm getting stuck into it today. When I checked yesterday I was back on Page 4 but I've gone missing again today.

I think I'll add a few more backlinks and see what happens.
