Offliners: Have you tried this...?

Has anyone tried using PURLs (personal URLs) to land offline clients?

If you have, how successful was it? I know they have been successfully used by consultants in other industries to land clients...

It is a great tool to move an offline client to on-line ad. almost no one can resist typing their own name in a URL. Lol.

People make good money selling to the rich. But the rich got rich selling to the masses.

I've wondered about trying a more "out there" tactic if you're trying to land a bigger "AP" type of client of setting up a landing page with a url of something like:

(Let's say you are trying to land a big client named Jim Wilson)

        www.why-jim-wilson-is-smiling-now.com

Then use the same template for other big prospects

Interesting service! Could call it NANO hosting. It's worth a try I think, but again, how do they get around the creation of a domain name?

Hey Sam- It's just an off-the-cuff idea. If the client is big enough (large recurring monthly income possible) it might be worth it to buy a domain name and cheap hosting for it.

Again, not for every client- just for those with big potential. When you look at lifetime client value (plus possible referrals) it may be worth it.

Of course, having paid more for a PURL like that, you would want to call the client if they don't get back to you until you get a response.

I haven't tried PURLs on a cold mailing, but they work great when marketing to a business' existing customers.

If you believed the business owner could conceivably remember you, and then you got a message from him that included this:

"I set up a special website JUST FOR YOU. Go to YourName.mybusiness.com."

The average recipient doesn't know what a subdomain is, so this seems like a separate website. So few people can resist going and at least seeing what it's about.

I've used PURLs on both postcards and letters. They work very well.
