What is a ping list & what does pinging do?

In my wordpress blog I have a ping list.

i think things like ice rocket, feed shark etc

Apparently each time I post each of these sites are pinged.

But what does this do?

Does it send my post out all over the net for people to find?

    Sending a "ping" simply tells search engines... "Hey you! Look at me!"

        Hi Troy

        This is a brilliant question with no answer.
        I asked it over a year ago and got no answer that made sense to me.

        So I just do as I have been told and make sure my blog is pinged in the right places. I suggest you do the same. I've no idea why

    HI Troy,
    It just 'updates' the pinged services that you have a new post. Those services are then free to visit your WP site and capture the new post.

    To my understanding when you ping your post, the pinging service will let the search engines know that you have new content, so they can crawl your site. Which helps your content get indexed faster. That's it! Its basically letting the whole online community know that there is new information on your site which they may want to read or what have you.
    So, in a nut shell, by pinging your telling everyone that you have posted new information on your site.
    That's what I understand from it. I may be wrong though.
