Free forum tool?

Hi,
I'm looking to start a free forum for a niche I want to go after.

Can anyone recommend a free tool to create a forum that is easy for a non-programmer to use? Preferably one that I could monetize with some ads.

  • You should be able to install one through Fantastico with your host. What host are you using? Just log into your CPanel, click the Fantastico icon, choose forum from the sidebar menu and you should be able to automatically install a forum.
  • If you can invest go for Vbulletin.

    Otherwise go for this free one: Simple machines forums.

  • If you have fantastico you can do 1 click installs on PhpBB (I think) and SMF - personally i am a big fan of SMF, find their interface far easier to use for a nontechy like me

    • simplemachines.org can be a big help. Solved a number of issues using their forum
    • As others have said, you can easily install it through your web hosting control panel.
