the only thing that I can think of is this...
do you have spyware doctor installed (or something similar?)

I use spyware doctor, but this will apply to most 'active' malware programs. they will try to stick their digital 'fingers' onto any file downloaded. this can really slow down a computer sometimes.

IF your computer does not have enough CPU, memory, or swap file memory? it will lock up sometimes. -> what is your setup?

try downloading and running CCleaner (google it) and have it delete all of your various temp files...computers can get slow from all of the many temp files created from downloading files.

so run that, and if you have a spyware malware? try turning it off for the DLoad.
    .
..if that does not work? you may need to have someone with some knowledge take a look at your computer. just too hard to diagnose this way.

  • Sorry, but I have to laugh. What is Microsoft's problem? Zip files are kind of basic. You'd think a mega-billion-dollar corporation could figure out a way to handle such a ubiquitous file format.

have to agree...vista seems to handle zips just fine, and I think vista also will pop open the newer zip format that programs like 7-zip use...and even IF that were the case? there are always programs like winrar that will open up (I believe) every compression format known.

now I am wondering if there is user error here...since you mention a # of tries? I will have to assume that you have made a purchase from someone using a program that is using a php download link...this kind of link HAS to be clicked, the "right click and save" function will appear to work, but you will
get nothing...as the download will only 'go' if the link is clicked on...so are you left clicking these links? or right clicking (save as)?

YesI'm sure the problem is operator error.

When I download a program I click run.

For example I downloaded site to traffic software now every time I try to open any other zip file ,site to traffic shows up on screen.

I tried to download Jack Duncan zipped file today, site to traffic popped up on the screen and started to download it started rapidly flashing.

I have to turn off the computer to stop this problem.

I will check into some other Windows programs mentioned above.

By the way I'm speaking on my computer tonight with Dragon NaturallySpeaking 10. This is really cool.

Thanks for all the help, it's much appreciated.

There could be a number of issues here. For starters: If you're using a download accelerator, turn it off.

      If you tried right-clicking, don't.

Check to see if your anti-virus/security software has a history of this. Some are just plain borked in this regard.

For those who aren't aware, some installations of Vista really do have problems unzipping files. Great honking big problems. They can range from incorrect file associations to harder to identify stuff that can give you fits. None of that seems to relate here, since he's having trouble downloading, not opening the file.
