Keyword Question - Is it worth fighting for a word that gets 4 million searches?

I am of course displaying my ignorance here, but could anyone give me a quick answer?

I have found a single word keyword. The .org is available. Broad match on the word shows 4 million searches.

Two of the top 10 sites are retail sites with thousands of pages, but only 8 and 2 links respectively to the page promoting the product I am thinking off, and no PR on those pages.

Is it worth trying to build a niche adsense site for the .org domain? Or would it have no hope at all?

    I would go for it.

Don't expect to rank for the big term very quickly though. You'll want to start by dominating long tail terms related to the big term.

For example let's say 'widgets' is your keyword. Concentrate first on getting links for your page 'small red widgets' until you rank for it. Then move on to 'large red widgets'. Then the next and then the next term until you're ranking for a large number of long tail terms. As you do this, you'll soon find yourself moving solidly up the ranks for the primary keyword. Eventually, you'll have the top ranking for the keyword and be in a nearly unbeatable position.

      Thank you Bgmacaw,

I guess all I wanted was one encouraging reply.

As Browning said, "a man's reach should exceed his grasp", so let's see what I can reach for.

      Thanks again
