Free hosting is partialy good but not quite what you should go for if what you are looking is to have an established profitable business.

My advice would be to further look into what is that you want to achieve for your business. If having control over your own business is a must then it is quite natural to go for an unlimited premium domain hosting.

The beauty of setting up an online business is by far the most economical way if you know how and only use the vital necessity tools to prosper.

A free hosting would be the company's property and not yours. Would also present you with limitations...not something that you need having on your own business. After all you want to be your own boss...right?

Well said Kazooli when it comes to your business it better to have a paid hosting provider. For one a lot of these free hosts will show add, and the server resources are slim to none. So once you start getting any decent amount of traffic your site will be constantly down.

I own my own domain, www.camcordermini.com and godaddy do not own it.

I got it from the godaddy droplist auction.

I have some hosting credits which came with it.

The domain is mine, however godaddy say I have hosting credits.

What are the pros and cons of taking up their offer?

I would not host with godaddy. If their hosting process is anything like their domain registration process is it would be hosting from hell!

I wouldn't use godaddy even for registering a domain... and definitely never for hosting.

As for the "free hosting" - look at this site: trinihomeinspection.com.
Watch all those ads at the top!!!

I really feel sorry for those guys. They have a decent website, they might even do a good job, plus, they are donating 5% to a nice charity!
Yet, they are freaking cheap to pay $4-5/mo for a normal hosting package.

Alexa,

the other day an old friend of mine called me all excited about registering a domain name for an offline business, telling me he was right on GD's site, looking at domain names.

When I told him to go to another registrar he was shocked: he didn't even know there are other registrars

!

Anyway, in about ten minutes I guided him through the phone to register, pay etc. - we even changed the DNS info (I mean he did it, I was just tele-guiding him...)

If he could learn it, I am sure you can, too!

I have sites hosted with GoDaddy... haven't had any trouble to speak of.

The cons is that they limit you to 250 SMTP relays unless you buy another 250, for a max of 500. If you're not sending a lot of emails through your hosting account everyday, that's no big deal.

Another thing I hate is I can't use SQL Server or MySQL client applications to access my databases. It has to be through their web-based interfaces.

Another thing is that they nickel and dime you over stuff, like email accounts.

But if you've got credits for hosting and email, I'd say give it a shot.

The ads thing is easy to solve. If you install a Wordpress blog, the ad doesn't even show up. Otherwise, you simply add the following bit of CSS code to your style sheet or in an on-page style block:

you should NOT give advice that breaks the TOS/Agreement etc. of the hosting site!

You are completely wrong about "hiding" the GD ads.

Please, read the Legal Agreement:

You further acknowledge and agree that as adequate consideration for Go Daddy providing You with the Services at no cost to You, Go Daddy shall have the right to place certain advertisements on Your web site. If You do not desire that such advertisements are placed on Your web site by Go Daddy, then You may purchase the Services at Go Daddy's current rates.

  I've been using GoDaddy for several years now and no problems. But I don't use the free hosting - I pay a minimum for it (about $14/month) and run several sites on it. I've always found their customer service easy and responsive whenever there's been an issue, so I don't understand what negative experiences have driven people away.
  
  The main point anyone must consider is having control of your content, and having a professional looking site.
  
  Owning your domain name and controlling your content are two different things. It's worth it to pay for hosting, just for those reasons.

I don't trust godaddy with anything, thats why I let any domains I had with them EXPIRE and moved on. I'm with namecheap now, and pay $10 a month for hosting through surpass hosting.

In my eyes, forget about godaddy and everything they do, bleh.

Course, I'm speaking from my own mottled and disfigured dealings with them.

I've never used GoDaddy for anything, and the reason for that is because I've heard too many bad news stories about them. For example, someone told me they had their site shut down for a single spam complaint, and the person is not a spammer. I forget how long it took to get their site back online, but it was several days, and that just shouldn't happen.

As a web developer, I would never, ever use GoDaddy. Maybe for file hosting (streaming videos, etc), but never for actual websites.

Paid or free, Godaddy is the worst hosting available, bar none. Hostgator or Hostmonster are far better options, although not free ... but they are cheap. Godaddy customer service in regards to their hosting is the world's worst.

It's hosted free on godaddy and they have an ad on the top saying that it's hosted free. I don't think you would want that.

I had a free godaddy hosting account once, i'm assuming that when you login to manage your domain there is an option for setting up free hosting.

I used this feature and they placed a block of ads right above my header about 150 pixels high right across the screen.

GoDaddy hosting is great. Very good support. Spare some bucks and don't even think to use the "free hosting option", since it will come with advertising (like everything that's free).

Paid or free doesnt matters Godaddy is one of the worst hosting provider over the internet.
Some reasons that make it that worst are:
1. its too complex.
2. no cpanel
3. some functions are disabled.
4. mail() is overloaded.some times fails.
5. restricted email forwarding.
and etc..
same goes for yahoo small business.
These hostings are only for small blog.
