When doing keyword research, I understand part of that research being to see who is ranking well under a certain phrase and ??why??.

To find out why, what am I suppose to be looking for?
I know I need to see how many backlinks they have, but whatelse?

      Thanks

Excuse me if this should be common sense but sometimes things just blow past me.LOL Are you saying "look on the webpage" or is "onpage" some other tool that can be used to check website's statistics, (like iWebtool dot com backlink checker, etc....)?

Look at onpage optimization. Is the KW in the title, header, meta description, in at least on link on the page?

Is it a top level domain or an internal page that ranks? Is the KW in the domain? How many links to the page? How many links to the entire site? How many pages does the site have and how many are indexed? Are there quality links to the site from authority sites as well as .edu and .gov sites?

These are some of the things you need to check out for the top 10 results.
