Why 3,000+ searches doesn't make a great keyword

This thread is to clear up a very common misconception about keyword research that I see all the time. Obviously, the more searches a keyword gets, the more potential traffic it can bring to your site (or review page, pre-sell page, underground crime-fighting lab, whatever). The key is to make sure that the keyword psychologically fits with your market. Keywords that are amazing for adsense sites might be terrible for affiliate pages. The key is to think like the person searching the term.

If you have trouble with this (it can be tricky at first), google the phrase yourself. If the first 5 results are mostly products, it's a buy keyword. If they're mostly information (wikipedia, etc.), it's probably better for adsense sites. Obviously, there are exceptions to this rule, but I think it's a major time-waster that a lot of people run into.

Hope that helps and makes sense!

Or you good see which sites on adwords have been their the longest (e.g. via KE) and duplicate your site around them. They won't be paying Google if they are not making any money
