Read the Damn Post BEFORE You Hit Reply!

[Rant warning]

We've got trouble, my friends...

That's right, trouble right here in the main forum.

The trouble I'm talking about is people reading a subject title and hitting that first, oh-so-tempting "Reply" button. They end up posting opinions that make no sense in context with the original post. Then they look like a fool with their pants on the ground... (Damn ear worm...)

Here's a perfect example:

http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...-daughter.html

The OP puts forth a sensible plan for people who are considering a move to operating a business full-time. A plan that could save a lot of stress and heartache.

The thread is filling up with posters urging George and his daughter to "go for it" and posters telling him he's foolish for giving up his job. Obviously, neither group actually read the original post, just the subject line.

It's the online equivalent of not listening to the other person before you answer them.

And it's downright
disrespectful!

Discussion is fine, having an opinion is your right...

BUT BEFORE YOU HIT REPLY, READ WHAT THE HELL YOU ARE REPLYING TO!

[End of rant. Back to regular schedule.]

    I agree.

It's nice of you to mention it, but I don't think this is the right place to promote a dating e-book

And a lot of them are waiting for their turn to speak just to get a little sig file exposure. Rapid-fire posting, one liners, etc. No time to read.

P.S. What was this thread about, I hope my reply makes sense and is related to what the OP said ...

Come on, Becky, everyone knows a giant vat of pudding is not tax deductible unless you're actually in the insurance business.

    Sheesh, what were you thinking?

PS - Who else thinks this thread is going to turn silly sooner or later?
PSS - Sorry John, I could resist. I do agree with your post.

Dennis, what does the VAT (value added tax) have to do with anything? I know Clickbank collects it. But you have to collect it yourself if you're using PayPal.

What? You mean I have to pay attention to what people are saying before trying to get my post count up so that people will think that I'm 'respectable' and able to pass off as a guru? Are you kidding me?

All that work, and there's no reward, other than a good conversation that might happen 'cause I actually read the thread.

    Forget that!

I'll stick to my 'great post guy' replies and you can just leave me and all my friends alone!!

    /sarcasm.

I'm with you though, brother, its outrageous to see stuff like that, and even moreso when its a huge thread full of good info.

I'd boot them all if I could. Oh well, one can certainly dream.

It only took me 247 tab presses, I think you need a new computer. Just stick your credit card into that little slot on the side of your laptop and wait for the options screen to appear.

I love the sarcasm. Sum u guyz funny!

When you see posts that are of zero value and coming from people who clearly didn't read the OP, it's typically the ones just trying to get their post count up or simply hoping to gain exposure to the link in their signature.

It's even worse in the sales forum where other sellers purposely jump in with a one-liner, praying that one of the OP's customers click the sale thread in their signature.
Basically, they try and hijack the OP's thread instead of actually going into the main forum and adding some valuable posts to build their own reputation.

It's not their fault though, they're probably just following the advice of a forum marketing guru.

Yup, on a serious note, I agree with every single thing John pointed out in his OP. It's sad and annoying at times when people reply to posts asking simple (and sometimes stupid) questions, when the answer is CLEARLY in the post that they are questioning -- they just don't read.

I always see posts where a seller will list a bunch of products: $5 for A, $6 for B, $8 for C, etc.

Some genius will reply saying "I understanding C is $8, but how much are you charging for B?".

The post that John points out is a golden example: http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...G8yeTB6RFLBQNq

But like some others said, the people who need to be reading this won't. WHY? Because... hello... they don't READ!! If they READ, we wouldn't be having this issue in the first place, would we??

      EDIT:

John you forgot to say one thing that seems to be 'the' thing to say these days around here:

That's a good point, but face it, in a day or two this will be gone of the front page and forgotten. Those who need the message aren't going to change because they read this one time, if they read it. They are creatures of habit, and habit will win out.

I'll see if I can actually say something:

The headline is supposed to entice the reader to read on and see what it's about.

If it doesn't have enough curiosity value people will make assumptions about the post based on what the headline says.

Why should a forum post be any different?

Yes it dose seem that too many people are replying for the sake of posting a sig. Why bother if you can not take the time to read and give honest feedback. It adds no value to the original posters question or comment.

After careful thought and consideration I'd like to
reconsider my previous response to this thread.

Article marketing can work if done correctly but "the
man" will never give the little guy a chance... so don't
put all your eggs in one basket and be sure to cross that
stream when you come to it.

That's really all I have to say on the subject...

John, do you know why people do this? I know I'm going to strike a lot of
      nerves with this but whatever.

They do it because they are so self absorbed and consumed with their own
lives. Nothing else apart from what they feel, think and say matters.

And that is also one of the biggest reasons why so many people don't
have any success as marketers. Somebody will give them some very good
advice but they won't hear it. They're so consumed by what's going on in
their head at the time that it's like the other person didn't say a word.

And you know how I know this?

Because I used to be the biggest offender.

My own little world was so big, it could have filled the whole galaxy.

It wasn't until I got my head out of my ass and started listening to
people who might have had something useful to share with me that I
      started to have real success.

Yes, I know I can still talk people's ears off. But at least I have learned
      to listen...not just hear...but listen.

But the problem you're addressing is a common one among people and
I seriously doubt it's going to go away any time soon.

After all...who is more interesting than us?

Me ME MEEEE! Lordy, Wagenheim, why's it always gotta be about you? Just because you're the only song writing ventriloquisting marketing dude any of us will ever know, it doesn't have to go to your head, man. Humility, pal.

I don't really care if they read the OP or not, but what tans my hide beyond belief is when someone hi-jacks a thread.

There is no excuse for that behavior, whatsoever.

Can we add a poll to this thread regarding hi-jacking?

Me thinks thats what the OP was really taking about, anyway.

Look, we all know that this is a result of the Google Dance caused by content appearing on Google being duplicated on Yahoo. If you guys would run your posts through a spinner before you post them, we could avoid this problem and our backlinks would all backlink themselves again.

I only ever read the last three posts in a thread before replying and I'm now a bit worried about Steve having his head up his ass, John being ironic, and we're going to have a poll about hi-jacking, whatever next?
