What's Page 1 Worth to You?

Hi All,
I had an experience the other day which made me think - it made me think, or rather question peoples business sense.

Let me ask you a question.
If you could get onto page one of the search engine results what would that be worth to you?

You see I asked one of my clients this the other day and they actually looked at me puzzled.
After a moment or two of silence they replied that they didn't know - and dig this, they didn't know because they had assumed that they would always be paying for adwords or the likes in order to get business, organic search handed even occurred to them.

Now I know for each of my sites just what page one will mean (and does mean) - but how about you?

Have you made the assumption that you will always be paying for traffic or do you know what page one really means?

I know that page one means shed loads of optins - what would it mean to you - or are you basing your plans on pay per click?

Paul.

It worth nothing to me. Getting on page rank is so much easy if you are competing for a term without any competition.

What matters to me is the search volume of the keyword term I am ranking (or trying to rank for). If people are searching for it and I am there, amazing. But if nobody is searching for it and I am there, no big deal.

I made a post on my blog about how many people die for #1 rankings but they never realize that they should be worried about search volume: Will getting ranked #1 on google get your traffic? | Afaq's Traffic Blog

BTW, I know that's not what OP really wanted to know but I just had to say it

      Mo,
you are of course quite right - no point in being the king of the moon if you're on your own right?

The thing is a few of my clients are speculating on up coming trends (stuff that has either not happened yet or products that are hus hush) - so when they start there are no traffic stats - but by aiming for page one for related stuff it means that they can grow their lists in advance and then use the lists to really ho down the competition - whilst already being number one in their main niche.

        Mark,
just saw your post - you are of course quite right.

It's the difference between poor or laughing to the bank, it's something that you would assume that people all KNOW but when you take clients from the off line world and bring them online then the business mentality kicks in - which is not the same as the creative marketer.

I wanted to pose the question just to nudge people who are still living 'in the brick and mortar world' to 'think' (I know we usually use the phrase think outside the box but these days the box is so big that you can stay inside and still get shed loads of happiness).

In the offline arena i can understand this, but here nooo i doubt anyone will still think like that and if they do im very worried!

More often than not getting on page one or that top position can mean 1000's of extra dollars in your pocket a day, week or month! Plus once your there then you really don't usually need to do alot more to keep that position.

I think it makes alot of differance i have just made the 1st page for the keyword filehost albeit its No10 but its a major milestone for me and we are also at No21 for the keyword filehosting this i feel will take longer to get onto the 1st page but with some extra hardwork i feel that we can do it some time soon, the added bonus its free its been gard work but well worth it.

      That's fantastic going!

Once you get it up to the very top that's when you will see a massive difference in traffic but you should already be beginning to see some now anyway!

The OP is far too simplistic to have any meaning.

In fact, it might be worth nothing to you to get
on the first page of search engine results.

The notion that someone might have the knowledge
and skill to rank high in SERPS tells me nothing about
their ability to convert the traffic that might come
    their way.
