Sales Success! Share your opinions in the debriefing

Hi everyone! I wanted to let everyone here know that, after about a year of ideas, attempts, and probably 10 different websites, I finally made my first series of sales! I sold 7 copies of my e-book for $19.95 each. Not too much compared to some of you here I'm sure, but it's a big start for me!

Now for the debriefing, and an opportunity for you to share your thoughts:

I found that I was having 0% success by sending people to my site via Adwords and Article Marketing. I sent them to the sales page and they all just left.

So I rethought my strategy. I built a blog for my target market and over three months got about 75 subscribers and about 3,000 visitors a month. Then I had a one week sale for my e-book, which resulted in the 7 sales I mentioned. All of the customers were frequent blog visitors.

Now, I wanted to be abolutely sure of what was making the difference here, so I sent another large number of first-time users to the exact same sales page using Adwords. This time, no sales.

My conclusion: Building rapport with potential customers and getting them familiar with you and your company makes them more likely to buy. Almost no one is going to buy from someone they've never heard of (at least not on the first pitch). It takes some amount of pitches before they'll consider buying something from you. I don't know what that amount is, but it's more than one.

MY QUESTION FOR ALL OF YOU:
How much rapport do you find you need to build before sales start coming in? How much marketing around your brand do you do? My three month blog to $140 in sales was a great learning experience, but it's not really sustainable or scalable. I need to learn how to build rapport with many more customers without as much effort.

Thoughts? Techniques? Please share! Thanks!

"I sold 7 copies of my e-book for $19.95 each."

    - Very very nice! Congratulations.

"I built a blog for my target market and over three months got about 75 subscribers and about 3,000 visitors a month."

    - Just wait until that list hits 1,000, you'll definitely get there.

Answering your question: I don't actually sell a particular brand but I tend to try and point people in the right direction. Usually if you work with the right programs you can start seeing success quite quickly (I would generally see 30$ in adsense by the second month) which would obviously jump a little higher the next.

One great technique. Give them something. Don't just sell products. Give away free things too. It really does help in creating a list of subscribers. Just my thoughts

      Thanks!

I definitely know that over time I can build more subscribers and a larger customer base, which is what many of the techniques on these forums seem to advocate, but it seems so slow. I guess a more concise way of asking my question would be:

      1) Is it POSSIBLE to actually make first-time-visitor sales, if they have never heard of you, your company, or your product?
      2) If that IS NOT possible, what are the fastest ways to build rapport with many potential customers? A blog seems like a slow way to go.
