The past five days have been...interesting for me. I wanted to share what I've learned. These are in order of importance from least to most.

5. Have A Plan - Whether you're new to IM or not, you've gotta have a definite plan of action in order to succeed. I had started to flounder, and my earnings went STRAIGHT down the drain for the month of January. Lesson learned: if you see your earnings change, ask WHY immediately.

4. Close Everything - If you find yourself losing focus because of WF, other forums, email, Skype, etc...CLOSE THEM ALL while you're working. I was forced to do this the other day, and was amazed at how much actual work I accomplished! Lesson learned: if it's not necessary to the right now, you don't need it.

3. Get Back On That Pony & Ride - I'm very lucky to belong to a group of people who chat on Skype and this group includes several of the "big" names here on WF. (I still get star-struck sometimes but I won't let THEM know that. ) The other day I posed an idea, one I'd been working on and collecting info on for months, and it immediately got shot down as having been done before and not being very profitable. Instead of getting my hackles up, I understood that these people are much more experienced than I am, and I took their advice (I was really, really upset about it but that's just IM). Lesson learned: listen to those around you who are more experienced even if you don't like what you hear.

2. Chuck Your Pride Out The Window - During the above conversation on Skype, one of the people asked if I'd like a 10-minute coaching session to help give me some direction. Well, this guy is younger than me and I really don't know him from Adam (he's new to the group, but not to IM), my first reaction was to say "Save it for the newbies." I had to really think about that. Instead of turning him down, I swallowed my large ego and took him up on his offer. Turns out, in about a half an hour, he gave me not only direction and focus, but a complete freakin' business plan to follow. Lesson learned: your ego sucks sometimes and can get in the way of your success...know when to bitch slap it.

1. Live Like There's Noooooo Tomorrow - I was in the ER last week because I (and the ER docs) thought I had suffered an aneurysm. Turns out it was just a really violent migraine, but in those few moments when I had to question whether or not I was going to be around to watch my kids grow up and to grow old with my husband, I learned not to sweat the small stuff. And really, it's almost ALL small stuff. Lesson learned: relax, enjoy, slow down.

Hope this helps someone.

    Hi Lisa,

Those are fantastic points, and some that only those who have had a close call can truly understand.

When I first heard the news about your hospital visit, my first thought was, "No! We can't lose Lisa. She has way too much to offer people."

Needless to say, we are happy that you're still here.

Besides, I wouldn't want to see the chaos that would happen once everyone started clamoring to take your title of "Official WF Babe".

    All the best,
    Michael

I have to do the same thing. If I leave my email client open, I read and answer emails as they come. That wastes a lot of time, because then I have to refocus on whatever it was I was working on. Better to just check 'em a few times through the day and deal with them at once.

The ego thing is an interesting one. A lot of "big names" won't come in here and ask for help (not publicly, anyway). But who expects a marketing whiz to know all the tech details, or vice versa?

Or just because someone might know how to SEO up one side of the Net and back down the other doesn't mean they'll have a clue about how to use PPC marketing. Or social bookmarking. Or affiliate marketing.

So, never be afraid to ask. As marketing legend Jim Straw recently said right here on this forum (paraphrased), the day he stops learning something is the day they'll bury him.

    cheers,
    Becky

Oh great. Just call me Becky Van Gogh.

          ---

And just to stay on track...

Our ego should be our servant, never our master.
It is a tough one. As the saying goes, "leave your ego at the door."

It's a common problem and you really see it magnified here on the forum. Folks come here looking for validation rather than actual input or feedback.

For example, they'll say "what do you think of this idea/design/sales letter/[other item]?" And when people don't jump up and down and pat them on the back, they get mad. Defensive.

I mean you have to take feedback with a grain of salt. But if everyone is saying the same thing about your project, sometimes you need to set the ego aside and really take the criticism into consideration.

          Those who do move ahead.

Those who don't get to be "right" -- but not necessarily successful or wealthy.

          Cheers,
          Becky

You said it, Becky! And if we're honest with ourselves, we're all guilty of letting our ego get the best of us now and then, in one degree or another, in one form or another. The ego can be hard to keep in check. It takes practice. But the rewards are worth the effort, in my egotistical opinion.

    Rule 1: Have a plan
Rule 2: Follow plan to conclusion
Rule 3: Adapt plan as necessary*
Rule 4: Go to rule 2

    * As necessary = if you've tried it and need to change it, do so.

Well done btw, Lisa - if you print your post and stick it where you'll see it where you work every day - you'll never have to lose focus/motivation again.

Hi Lisa, I am a newbie to IM and I am glad to have come across your thread! Thanks for the advice and I will keep them in mind!

I especially agree with you on the part on 'Living like there is no tomorrow', sometimes you really never know what is going to happen to you or your loved ones. It is important that to cherish every little moment you have together with them and appreciate every little thing that makes you happy about being you, and that makes you happy about being with them.

    Thanks again!

I guess that was the real lesson...when everyone shot it down, I'll admit...I cried. LOL And then I told my husband...man, you've got to have a thick skin to just get back up and start over again. And that's exactly what I did. Yay me! You can't quit. Just can't. Lisa, you talked about the most important priority being family and I agree and also use that as a motivation to "get back up".

Many years ago I was struggling with an issue similar to yours and realized that I would do anything for my family.

I would be be willing to die for my kids and knowing that about myself has helped me realize that I have the ability to conquer and to overcome anything if I have the right mindset.

Using my children as motivation I have been able to quit smoking. Cold turkey. I had this image of them visiting me in the hospital as I was dying of Lung Cancer and the truth would be that I chose that.

How could I look into their faces and deal with their pain of losing me due to choices that I made selfishly.

I made a commitment and stuck with it for my kids. If I would die for them can't I stop smoking for them?

Can I eat healthier so I can be around longer for my grandchildren?

If I can do these things then a little criticism from someone is nothing.
Writing an article is a piece of cake.

I guess when we put things into perspective the priorities in life just fall into place.

Really glad to hear you are doing better

Wonderful post, Lisa. IM can be a tough row to hoe, and it's all about focus, consistency and persistence. Sometimes we let the little (and bigger) distractions get the better of us, and in today's information-addled world blocking things out is much easier said than done, but it is a prequisite to success in IM.

Thanks for sharing your list, Lisa. It could be my list as well as I'm dealing with many of the same issues in my own online adventure.

My husband has been in the hospital recently too with some pretty scary symptoms. This has definitely brought home the importance of appreciating what I have in life and reminded me of why I do the things I do online--to have more time with those I love.

    Profound...

...and something I'm experiencing right now. There's just so much stuff going on in our lives, we just never notice how many things we keep worrying about.

And what I've found in all my years online is that worry does nothing but kill whatever is in its way: productivity, happiness, joyous moments..just everything.

    Thanks for posting this, Lisa.

Sagar, worry and fear are real dream killers that stop us in our tracks if we let them. I have several friends I have known over the last few years who have floundered in IM for well over 2 years now, and they don't seem to have made any progress at all in over 30 months. I have tried my best to give them as much advice as I could over the years, but they just don't "get" it as they still have that meager "employee" mindset. Their thinking is constantly riddled with worry, fear, and a mentality of lack and self-pity. I truly empathize with what they're going through, and sometimes I just feel like literally shaking all those negative emotions out of them. Unfortunately, at the end of the day, we are all responsible for our own destinies, only we can change them ourselves....no one else can do it for us.

Well said, Paulie. And I understand how you feel about that last sentence. It's amazing how much worry and negativity people can store inside them. You could just walk up to someone and make friends with them and within minutes they will supply you with oodles and oodles of worry, fear and apprehension.

If only they took a moment to relax and take another look at everything they say, they'd be far more better off than they are now.

But like you said, no one can do it for them.

Thank you for replying. And Lisa again, for posting this - needed a 'shake up' myself.

No doubt, it's hard! But what I found is that because I had so many less distractions, I was able to focus so well and work so hard that I didn't notice it after awhile...and also, it was nice giving myself "permission" to not have to answer every single email within seconds, etc.

But seriously, your post is helpful for folks who are feeling alone and wondering if they are "doing it right".

This Internet stuff can be isolating and when we don't succeed where we think we should, we tend to ramp up production and that is not always the answer to the problem.

Sometimes, as you have pointed out the answer is to take a step back and have a look at where you are and enjoy the success that you already have.

    Matt

Ok, the "feel good" stuff is over. Time to get back to picking on WF Babe

    Lisa-
There's nothing like thinking someone is going to die to get thinking about the important stuff. For the past couple of weeks we were so scared my husband had something terminal. It turns out he was under so much stress it was causing physical damage to his body and his organs weren't functioning properly. So we have to do a major evaluation of our lives.

Our kids are 5 and 7 years old. Last year we didn't take them camping once, even though they wanted to go, and it is free here. We didn't take them fishing even once, because my husband and I would have to buy licenses to take them, and we just didn't take the time or money to do it. I kept thinking of all the things I wished we had done, and I wrote them all down. I wrote down all the things I was thinking and feeling, actually, because learning how to live more in the moment and all the things I learned from this would make a good blog, don't you think?

The ironic, and kind of sad thing, is that my husband's stress comes from being self-employed. He wants the security of a paycheck, self -employment just isn't for him. Unfortunately, his business makes more than mine, so I'm going to be the one going back to work, for now. Plenty of people do IM and work full time, so I know I'll keep working on my dreams, too.

I love him enough to do whatever I can to get the stress off him. I can't imagine trying to raise these two kids alone, and what a hole that would leave in their lives!

So, you don't have to wait for a health scare to start taking a look at your lives. Just sit down and imagine, if I had 3 months to live, what would I do with that time? Who would I want to see? What would I like to do? What would I regret not doing? Who would I miss, and who would miss me?

As long as you are still breathing, it is never too late to change the way you look at the world.

When I doubt myself I think about the fact that I only have ONE life. One chance to do everything I can before my time is up. When I think about things from this perspective doubt, fear, and worry all fall aside.

      Lisa Said:
"Lesson learned: listen to those around you who are more experienced even if you don't like what you hear."

All of us (and I'm at the top of the list on this one) like to listen only to those who agree with us on things to sort of validate our own positions. One of the hardest things to do is to understand the perspectives of those with opinions different than ours. And those opinions can actually help us grow.

Lisa, sometimes us old farts here (again, I'm at the top of that list as well) tend to get up tight and groan and grumble about things. But you are always honest and upbeat in what you provide--and that's something we (I) need to hear--it's refreshing . --Mike
